Hotel 31

This hotel reminded us of a Nancy Drew game, starting with the check-in desk that had the little cubbies behind it for messages, to the small elevator with the door and brass gate, to the narrow hallways, and to the charming old-world yet modern decor. It was a very interesting place and we liked the intrigue of it. We would stay there again.

I booked this location because it was “cheaper” for nyc on the days I was going and it was rated 8.0 out 10. I’ve never checked in, walked into a room and then checked out within 30 minutes until this hotel. It may be helpful for some that this is a 8.0 rating on a 2 star hotel (which is generous). It may be clean but it did not feel clean. It felt outdated and dirty. The room was cramped. It would be similar to a hostel experience but with a personal room and bed (but $120) Like I said we didn’t stay very long. It was a quick impression but it was enough of an impression for me and my spouse to know we didn’t want to stay.

It was amazing. Not everything was great, but overall we enjoyed our stay. The decor was quaint and friendly. Nostalgic even. The building was built in 1914 not 1945. Although the rooms were small, they were comfortable, the only issue we had was the noise. Noise from the air conditioner, squeaky box spring, and the housekeeping who cleaned late into the evening and early in the morning. The vacuums and banging of trash cans were not welcome. We did, however, welcome be to Friendly spirits we saw there. One small Woman in a Black Dress, and a tall Banker with a handlebar mustache. No, we are not wackadoodle mediums or mentally unwell. We are just a mom and daughter who experienced Spirits regularly. This place is not haunted! Do not mistake visits from friendly Spirits as haunting. The little lady that I saw was probably a maid back in the early 1900s. The banker may have had some Financial connection to the property. My 17 year old even had dreams of many spirits connected to that property. As she slept on the twin size bed, she tossed and turned and often woke me to tell me of her dreams. The front desk staff was not as friendly as the spirits! He was not welcoming nor did he give basic information about our state. We will be back however it is not because of the staff but because of the Friendly spirits.

Great location and everything you need for an affordable stay. It has become my go to place when visiting the City. Impressed with how clean the place was, even the 'shared' bathrooms. Staff were very accommodating and allowed us to leave our luggage at the hotel before check in.
