The Modern is just that. Contemporary, urban, hip, very cool looking. Definitely more of a business hotel. Noisy, bustling place if that's what you are looking for. Relaxing, it's not. For the price, I felt the room was very small. It was clean, modern decor, did not care for the shutters leading connecting the sleeping area and the bathroom, while it was different, I would have rather had the privacy. The staff was exceptional, very courteous and accommodating.

A great location overlooking marina on the edge of Waikiki beach, within easy 10 min walk to the convention centre. A lovely fresh contemporary renovation and extremely helpful staff. The hotel restaurant, Morimoto is outstanding. Asian fusian food that would rival many of Melbournes best. Our partial view room on the eight floor was welcoming and spacious […] with good views - a little noisy on the balcony but otherwise quiet. Watch out for the ankle biting corners on the bed's timber platforms though. The Hawaii Hiking Cafe just down Ala Moana Bvd is a gem. Lisateave

Service was OK. A lot of noise from the nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights. So ask for a room far away from the nightclub.Location not so good, pity it is so far from Wakkii Beach. Breakfast was expensive, but the hotel was close to shops. Tour booking girl was not helpful at all.

We were recommended The Modern by a friend who is an events organiser - he had the hotel on a short list for future events and wanted us to provide a review of the hotel! We found every aspect if the hotel extremely satisfactory and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Whilst it is at the end of the famous Hawaian beach, we did not find this any inconvenience […] - on the contrary, it allowed us to enjoy walks along the beach and through the nearby parks! Morimito's Restaurant is excellent - we dined in and also ordered poolside sushi - and whilst it is expensive, the quality offset any concern cost-wise! My husband and I love this hotel. The service is amazing and has been that way since the very first time we stayed here in March 2013. We've been back two times since. We want to make this our permanent staycation hotel when we need a break from the hustle and bustle of our Oahu life. The service is amazing. Everyone is nice, friendly, and on point. […] The hotel is clean and the decor is just our style. Everything from the lobby, lobby bar, pool, to the details around the property. Morimoto's is delicious and a one-of-a-kind experience. The room service food and food at the pool is very good as well. This time we had some friends in town from the Bay Area and we rented a day bed at the pool (which we had to spend a minimum of $150 on food and beverage). Best decision ever. So much fun! The only thing we wish we did was go to the club on Saturday night. We passed out early this trip and didn't go out. Addiction nightclub is fun, and if you don't want to deal with the club and loud music, the Lobby Bar downstairs is a great alternative. No dresscode for the Lobby Bar! Lisateave

This hotel is situated at the end of the beach overlooking the harbour. Close to lots of shopping. Nice views of the harbour from balcony and pool area is beautiful and staff very attentive. Pool drinks a little pricey. It is not noisy and overcrowded like other hotels and I would highly recommend it if you can get a good price on a room.

The room was crisp, clean and fresh in appearance. The room was so condusive to romance and comfort. Having my name on the television was such an unexpected personal touch. This boutique hotel are doing all the little things that made it a pleasure to stay here. Upon checking in, we were presented with a fresh glasses of lemonade and face cloths. (What are you suppose to do with the face cloths anyway? ) There is FRESH (and very good ) coffee along with REAL cream is offered in the lobby in the morning. This beats the […] yucky packaged stuff with the matching dairy-like product that is often supplied in a lot of other hotels. Hotel is only a block from a non-crowded beach, and there is plenty to do on the half mile between it and the main shopping and event centers. The staff was absolutely amazing, going above and beyond to make sure our stay was as great as possible. The Modern is a great place to stay if you don't mind being out of the main Waikiki area as it is about a 10-15 minute walk into the centre of all the action. We love staying at The Modern because it has a very nice vibe and it has bright, comfortable rooms. The front desk staff are very friendly and helpful. We also love the adults only pool area.

The staff were really friendly, the reception and 'library' that hid the bar were very well designed. Even though tea making facilities weren't in the room, that was solved with delivery of a kettle, simple plus free coffee on tap in reception early morning is good. The breakfast menu could do with less egg based offerings and a simple yogurt at $20 […] is step - but that was the only negative. The rooms are very chic and having the balcony was great too - on all rooms. Just didn't get the time to enjoy the two pools but they looked great and the relaxing one just to dip feet with sand is novel. It was also good to be away from the main Waikiki strip and very close to Ala Moana shops - the Island Burger place is great. Lisateave

I stayed at the hotel for my wedding and honeymoon. It was wonderful and seemed like a breath of fresh air compared to the other tired hotels in Waikiki. The staff were wonderful and even the casual restaurant by the pool was delicious. We ate at Morimoto after the wedding and it was superb. I can't see staying anywhere else in Waikiki.

Customer service was outstanding. The have free wifi and and as many waters as you wanted. No nickel and diming for everything. Would recommend requesting an ocean side room - it can be a little noisy on street side.

He hotel was relatively easy to find located on the west side of the Waikiki strip. With the hotel being on the edge of the strip it was perfect for being able to leave the city for the day. Decor is minimalist and understated. Staff were relatively friendly and very helpful. The room was very nice, we had a partial ocean view room with a balcony which […] was nice for watching the sunset and drying out our beach towels. There was valet parking available for $28 or $20 per day if you parked yourself in the parade across the street. Rooms were very clean and had everything you could want including a fridge. Only unconvienent thing was that if you wanted ice, you had to call the front desk for them to bring it to you. Iron chef Morimoto has a restaurant in this hotel which we ate at twice during our stay. It was impeccable and delicious. A must if you are visiting the Honolulu area. We ate at the sunrise bar one morning for breakfast and it was delicious. Had drinks one afternoon at the sunset bar and it was very nice. Relaxing music, nice chairs with an ankle deep pool and good drink selection. Would return to this hotel in a heartbeat and would recommend it to anyone! Lisateave

We stayed at The Modern for our Honeymoon and we really enjoyed our stay. The staff at the pool, the front desk, and the concierge were all very, very helpful. We spent a lot of time just hanging out by the pool, and that alone made it worth the stay. We also ate a number of meals poolside and the food was quite good, a few of the breakfast items were […] exceptional. The location of the hotel is good too - far enough off the main Waikiki strip so it's less noisy, but close enough that most of the good restaurants and shops are just a short walk away. Overall we had a great experience. However, there was a union rally on one of the last days we were there, and because of this we became aware of mistreatment of the staff by the hotel's current ownership group. Hospitality workers in Hawaii are unionized, and the staff at The Modern has been working without a contract for the last couple of years. There were related complaints about unfair dismissals, cutback benefits, pay freezes, etc. Because the staff was so pleasant to deal with, this did not directly affect our stay (other than not being able to use the pool for about a half hour). However, it would prevent us from booking with The Modern again unless the ownership gets these problems with their staff sorted out. These people are the most important part of the hotel experience. Staff was very pleasant and extremely helpful with luggage, directions, tour planning, etc. The rooms were very clean and beds were comfortable. We had a great stay! Kathrin the front desk supervisor was terrific. We decided to upgrade our room when we arrived and she took the time to show us 3 different rooms before we made a decision. We chose a corner room on the 16th floor that had views of the ocean, with the sun rising and setting! Just stunning! She also made 3 recommendations for dinner-Morimoto's(in […] the hotel), Azure and Wolfgangs. Each one was special and delicious in its own way. Awesome place to stay. Seemed good for young professionals without kids. Kids are great but 40 screaming kids with goggles and floaties on (like at Hilton Village) doesn't lead to relaxing time. The Modern was a nice upscale place with a great location. I will stay there again.

We love this hotel, however booking late forced us into an undesireable room location viewing the room and an alley. The noise is this area was very loud with delivery trucks and street noise at a constant. It would have helped if the windows were updated with double pane glass. Our Front Desk person was very helpful and tried very hard to relocate […] us to no avail. All rooms were books to capacity. We will stay here again just as long as we book well in advance. During a one week stay our sleep was disturbed at least three times by sirens and loud noises outside the hotel, related to its proximity to a large thoroughfare - out of their control I know, but it might be a problem for parents of young children or others […] who are bothered by broken sleep. We stayed at this hotel for one night only, but our experience was very positive. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was lovely and contemporary. The extra details (such as the lemonade and washcloths) as we checked in were appreciated. Loved The Modern - very chic hotel located at the edge of the hotel strip so you had a little more privacy yet were within walking distance of everything. They have a beautiful saltwater pool and then an additional 'chill-pool' upstairs for "adults" (bar also, more of a splash bar/pool). Concierge staff were amazing - the best I've ever experienced. […] Super helpful and experienced. Hotel was squeaky clean and had a gorgeous view of both the beach and the mountains. My only complaint was I had to ask for hair/shower products EVERY single day (they never left them in the room - I have no idea why since they left about 10 towels to shower with...just no products to do so and I have fairly short hair so half a bottle would have sufficed but it was a bit annoying having to call all the time). They're also right by Ala Moana Park so if you run/walk it's perfect! (And coffee bar starts at 5:30AM...) Lisateave
