Excellent all around , and will be back again. My only gripe is the Bar needs a bit of opening out and make it more open plan to the large corridors. The staff were particularly helpful and often amusing

We only stayed there for one night but it is on my list of hotels to come back. Hotel is located in the quiet countryside about 5 minutes drive from the town. Can't blame the hotel but I should have requested room close to reception as one of my party is elderly and not suited to having to walk too far, our room seemed to get further away with every trip. This is just as a reminder to others, not a critisism of the hotel.

The hotel frontage was impressive but the rooms were a later add on with acoustic and plumbing problems. We were a little disappointed to be given a family room which smelt of stale smoke. Not ideal with a 3 year old. However after complaining we were very quickly moved to a much more appropriate room. Also we found it strange to be told that wifi was only available in the common areas (actually we could only get it in the main reception!). It is a old hotel so it's showing signs of wear and tear, but the room was large and with a comfort of home. Driving from Westport it was easy to follow the hotel road signs once we were in Castlebar.

The hotel is very close to Castlebar - no more than 5 minutes out. Plenty car parking. The hotel is a three star and the decor could do with a little sprucing up. Having said that, the room was excellent - very big with a lovely comfy bed.

Staying at a manor house turned hotel sounds amazing but Breaffy House is only amazing in the photos you'll see here. It is in a beautiful country setting, but the interior is anything but beautiful. All common areas seemed run down and there was a strange odor in the hall near the kitchen & pub. We literally held our breath as we walked through that […] area. A couple good points-our room was large and there was live music in the pub each night. The online info. misrepresents the indoor pool like it's just for hotel guests---it's NOT. It's open through membership to the public; run more like a ymca. And they expect all swimmers to wear a rubber bathing cap! Haven't heard of that for decades. If you're visiting County Mayo I'd suggest one of the many hotels we saw in Westport or try a cozy b &b. Lisateave

Check-in very slick and pleasant. 2x rooms in the 3xx range on the second floor very clean, spacious and tidy for what was booked as 3* accommodation. (I've been in far worse 4* properties!) We arrived late after a journey from the Midlands and having detoured via the top of Croagh Patrick(!). Restaurant was closed but we were told that we could still […] get bar snacks, (pizza, curry etc. up to midnight). On trying to order these we were told that the kitchen was closed. I asked them to re-check but was gruffly told by a bar person that 'chef says the kitchen is closed for the night'. Not what we wanted to hear! A further trip back to reception to ask where locally we could get pizzas delivered from resulted in one of the team rustling up some very freshly made and tasty sandwiches that hit the spot exactly - thanks Bridie. Breakfast, (included in the rate we paid), was very good and set us up for the day. If I have to have anything negative to say about our stay it has to be the amount of kids running around in the bar until very late at night when they are tired and wretched. However the 'Hotel' we booked is when you get there a 'Resort' so families are encouraged. Don't expect peace in public areas! Overall if we wanted to stay in the area again we all decided that it was very good value on the deal we paid when booked late via Hotels.com, (possibly not so if we had to pay the full listed price on the back of the bedroom door Bord Failte notices). It was castle what can you say It Is old and needs a lot of work. We were suppose to get a room with a separate bedroom and two more beds But we got a bed and two cots not to good Food good but staff not to friendly.

Dark dingy room, view of roof & wall. V strong smell of cigarette smoke in room; felt like breathing in cig smoke all night. Door leading to adjoining room-could see between rooms/keyhole, which I blocked temporarily with tissue, could hear every move of person on other side. Carpet stains. TV aerial cable fed out thro’ window which made window difficult […] to close (v old TV - bad reception, no flatscreen here!) - cable obstructed closure of curtains. Grubby soap containers fixed to brackets in bathroom, grubby menus & tea/coffee tray - glad brought own towel! Husband tried to call hotel (was not staying) - phone remained unanswered twice - rang for a full 5 mins 2nd time - still no answer, automated message & passed around tel extensions. Noisy unsupervised group of children racing up & down corridor; someone from neighbouring room asked them to keep it down - they resumed noise shortly afterwards, lasted about 1/2 hr - it happens... At 9.30pm ish someone v noisy with bunch of keys & key cards tried to get into my room, trying the handle & pushing door several times quite aggressively. I opened door to find a red faced member of staff who mumbled something about me having phoned reception to report difficulty with my lock. Even if I had reported trouble with lock, I would like to think that in such circumstances he would have knocked first! Receptionist v dismissive following morning. Would not recommend – pity as could be good-has lovely grounds, that's about it. Lisateave

This was our second stay at Breaffy House, and we were impressed by the room only price for our family over the two night stay. Our room was excellent - comfortable and spacious and much better located in the building than last time. This is a beautiful country house setting. The pool is also great and much enjoyed by our kids. My only negative comment […] concerns the area just outside the front door. When we arrived late on Friday evening a college graduation function in the hotel had just ended and there were lost of people about. A number of disgusting smoking girls were standing outside and in the entrance and made little effort to move as we excused ourselves to get past. The following morning they were all gone but their numerous cigarette buts remained all over the ground and in the flower pots outside the front door all weekend. No member of staff was delegated to clean up this unsightly mess, or move the offenders away from the door in the first place. Perhaps staffing is stretched but if one of the usually idle reception staff had spent 10 minutes with a dustpan and brush this mess could have been sorted. Lisateave

Located at the end of a long driveway in substantial grounds, the exterior of the hotel is certainly more pleasing than the standard modern 'box' hotel. On entering the lobby, you are greated with a huge open fire and impressive high ceilings which give the hotel a very welcome feel. The lady on reception was fantastic, really friendly, polite and helpful, […] couldn't have asked for more. So at this point everything seemed really top notch, it is only when you start the 'journey' to your room that things do start to show some weeknesses. Firstly, if your room number starts with 1-- you have to go up a flight of stairs along a corridor and then down another fligh of stairs which seems rather odd and poor design.Also the communial area is a little shaby in places and could do with some tlc. When you do reach your room, it is perfectly addiquite, but certainly lacking charm, think functional/practical rather than cosy/romantic. Having said that, the rooms are large, everything works, good shower, tv, iron, tea/coffee etc. Other than that, the leisure facilities are very good, excellent pool & jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and plunge pool, although again, it looked like some of the pool area could do with a bit of a touch up. Would say this place is great for conferences/business travel etc but not quaint enough for weddings/romantic breaks, but with a few tweeks it could be magnificent. Lisateave

Appartments were lovely only problem the tv didnt work and ireland were playing in rugby world cup next morning. So we phoned reception to get tv sorted. I stayed at Breaffy for a family funeral and even though the occassion was sad, I looked forward to staying in the old Manor. The exterior of the building promises old world elegance and if you stay outside you wont be disappointed. The interior was shabby and not looked after with any attention to detail. The first thing you see inside the door was […] a sloppy coffee area and a sandwich board leaning against the wall. The rest of the place was in the same shambles. The food at dinner was horrible and I am positive they actually had refried the chips from leftover cold ones. The breakfast was average but the service was awful. On the second morning our waitress left me sitting waiting for my first cup of coffee for almost 20 minutes after I asked twice. She acted like it was a bother and she was very unfriendly. The first morning I had to return to reception to get vouchers that were not offered on arrival and my husband was told to stand and wait until I returned instead of being seated. There were only three other tables in the place so its not like they were run off their feet. All in all it was very bad value. The only upside was the pool area which was clean and comfortable. I heard they are going into receivership and if this has been the standard of service its no wonder. Lisateave

Our stay in the Breaffy House was a short one. In general, the service was quite good- the staff are pleasant and helpful, but the hotel feels a little dated. It was very busy the night we stayed and we had to wait to get a seat in the bar and wait a good while to be served. We had a wonderful holiday, the kids facilities are excellent. They have a kids club that starts at 11am and goes on until after 8pm, at the kids club my son did Zumba, Crazy Golf, Played in the playground, Soccer, Arts & Crafts, Pool Splash, watched a movie and got a tatoo. The kids club takes kids from 4 years upwards and is free, they only had a […] tiny charge for the tatoo. I also had a 2 and a half year old and I was able to put her into the creche for an hour and a half while I went to the gym. The girls in the kids club and gym and so nice and helpful I couldn't praise them enough. I stayed in the Breaffy House Hotel which seemed quieter than the Woods Hotel however at night I went to the woods hotels for the entertainment as it suited kids more but the woods hotels is located behind the house hotel so I was quite happy to walk across. Another thing that impressed me about my stay was the value for money. Normally when you get good deal at a hotel you are then charged outrageous prices for hotel facilities however at the breaffy everything I thought was reasonable, I ate at the house hotel and the food was very reasonable. They were very busy so we did have to wait a bit for the food. I will definitely be staying again next year, I've also told some of my friends and they'll said they'll be going also. I think having the kids club free is an excellent idea. Lisateave

I chose this hotel especially for the children as it was their holiday. I was a little worried on reading some reviews however, I had no need to. Staff were very friendly and always had a smile on their faces. Couldn't do enough for us when baby fell ill and very grateful for that. Room was spacious and adequate, had everything we needed including bath. […] Kids club was fantasic, our kids couldn't wait to get back to it at mealtimes and it literally went on all day. A special thanks to Michelle who looked after our kids one night and the baby in the Creche, highly recommended. Breakfast was excellent with a huge variety, would return for this alone. Our only critique was the bar food - it really was mediocre. The menu could be updated, too many fish dishes and not a great variety of choice, kids meals weren't great (kids did not like pizza and they normally love it). It should include more healthy options. I found some of the staff extremely slow and inefficient (they forgot our orders on a couple of occasions and never informed us if there were slight changes to dishes, had to send one meal back). One particular staff member was extremely rude and ignorant, could have done with smiling at least once, this area really needs improving. Didn't try the restaurant because of this. It won't deter me from visiting Breaffy House again though and I hope to return next year. Lisateave

Yes, a sneering general manager slagging the fact that I had a Liverpool jersey on. (for the owners....it was the red head guy!) It was very rude and certainly did not come across as friendly banter.
