The Sofia Hotel - San Diego

One would be hard-pressed to find a more central location for the price. Although the room is on the small side, it is comfortable and very clean. The hotel offers a free walkabout on the weekend - highly recommended! It also has bicycles which you can use free of charge - this is my favourite feature. Would definitely stay there again!

We chose The Sofia because it was close to town and with hotel.com rates, very affordable. Have no hesitation in recommending to anyone wanting a location within San Diego, close to everything. Free Bicycles for use, free wifi, Business centre, etc... Loved it!

Only thing was that the restaurant at the hotel doesn't serve breakfast on week days, but this meant we had to try several local places. Not really a bad thing.

This hotel had everything I neede. I was there for a conference , the Ralph's grocery store was close and I was able to get snacks and even have a hot soup handy, more so that I was jet lagged and morning time for me was at 4 am . Everything was close , I walked to the Seaport village about 1.5 miles away and enjoyed the walk . Safe and not noisy . […] I enjoyed the yoga room as well. I drove down from Los Angeles for a two night stay and I read other reviews first. If you see 1 negative review it makes you doubt, but I took a chance and I was very pleasantly surprised. My room was small but extremely clean, nice, dark wood, cozy, comfortable, intimate and very unique because it was built in 1926, but it's also been modernized. Pros: […] Great internet connection, TV, microwave, bed, sheets, closet space, adjoining restaurant downstairs, not overcrowded at all, it feels like your own personal hotel and the gym is perfectly kept, close walking distance to 7-11 and other restaurants, 2-5 blocks. 8 blocks from Ocean, great A/C. Negatives? Parking is $30 overnight and hotel access is not simple as it's on a main street, parking lot view and small space. Downtown SD also has many homeless... but not just here, everywhere. If you like high class or a hotel that reminds you of a 1940's movie, this is for you. And it's safe if you have a family, and I do. It's perfect for 2 people, no more. Very intimate and unclogged and I guarantee you won't regret it. This review is real, I'm a writer in TV from LA, not that that means anything. I was very pleased overall. Very nice old hotel in downtown San Diego. The room was decent but small. Was good for a one night stay but would recommend a larger one for a longer stay. Also lack of on street parking required valet parking.

Homeless people everywhere. Hotel creepy and weird vibe. Not at all what I expected. Location not in a good area downtown - had to take cab to go out when thought was within walking distance. Will never stay here again.

The hotel is in a great location if you are a walker - about 10 minutes from Gaslamp and 10 minutes from the ferry to Coronado. The restaurant is charming and has a good vibe. The Coffee Bean is right in the lobby, which is a big score for those who need caffeine periodically during the day. I was however appalled that we were not informed upon check-in […] that a new restaurant was being built DIRECTLY under our room. It sounded like they were going to come through the floor...all day long...starting at 8am. Hammers, drills, and lord knows what else was what woke us up and kept us from even having a basic conversation within our room. Thankfully we knew our days would be spent away from the hotel and given the explosion of female luggage all over the room, we decided we would not complain to move rooms. Stayed here for 1 night with wife and 2 kids. Pros: Front desk staffs were very nice. Location is close to everything. Price was good compared to other hotels nearby. Room was clean. Cons: Room is small. We had a room with 2 full beds and only had enough room to walk. Bathroom is even smaller, had stand up shower and toiler (that's it). Sink is in hallway […] next to entrance. Water from shower splattered all over the floor. Might not bother some folks but the AC was loud. Enough that both wife and agreed that it was annoying. This is a well-conceived boutique hotel. The rooms are somewhat small but ergonomically designed (except for the desk chair, which was large and in the way). Nice amenities, comfortable bed with good linens and pillows. It's a short walk to restaurants, bars and shopping, and the hotel restaurant, Current Brasserie, is decent. There are a couple of […] "gotchas." They only have $30 a day valet parking and they charge an additional 7.95 per day for a resort fee--largely services that I did not use--such as HBO, small fitness center, bike usage, a weekend city walking tour. This is a disappointment, especially since I only learned about it a check-in. For a small city hotel, this is a very poor practice, as you have no choice but to pay it. Room was on the small side, but not too bad. Bathroom was dark, window treatments cheap, TV's very oddly placed on the wall to the point that you cannot watch them. If you get a good deal, take it, but if not, look elsewhere.

Wow! Clean, cozy, luxury accommodations with personality plus. The staff was courteous and seemed to love what they were doing. We were genuinely surprised by the entire stay. We had a room on the 7th floor with queen bed. Square footage it is small, but perfect for a overnight stay! Walk across the street to shop At Horton plaza. Lots of food in the area like yard house, sushi deli (recommend) and we partied at the shout house! Great time!

We had come for spring break and was very pleasantly surprised by the beautiful (albeit tiny) room. It had a microwave, a couple of water bottles, refrigerator, flat-screen with HBO - just ideal, and for the price, the location was excellent - walking distance to a plethora of dining options and a mall. The Hotel Sophia is clean, pleasant and in a great location but our room was very, very small - roughly the size of an average bedroom. Also - as with most downtown locations - be prepared for high parking costs. Ours was $30.

I was a bit reluctant due to the many reviews that said the rooms were small but we got a great corner room with great views that has ample room for the two of us. The room was well appointed, clean and comfortable. Location is fantastic; within walking distance to many area attractions. All the important landmarks are close to the hotel and is convenient regarding availability of public transport. The quality of service is good and the staff are generally very courteous. We stayed for four nights and had a great experience! We were able to get a deal of 40% off, which put the hotel within our budget, and we would definitely stay there again with that kind of deal. We found everyone to be very helpful and friendly; the location was within walking distance from all the "downtown" attractions we wanted to see (Gaslamp/Little […] Italy/Embarcadero/Convention Centre/Waterfront) and to public transportation. Though the room was small it was well designed and had plenty of storage for the 2 of us, and we did not have any issue with noise (though maybe we just lucked out with quiet neighbours). The exercise room and yoga studio were also beautiful. I would definitely recommend this hotel! Lisateave

Very clean rooms, comfortable beds, friendly staff. Two things kept me from rating The Sofia "Excellent" The room itself was very small for a double bed suite. Felt & looked like a Japanese apartment. Two, we had a light bulb out above the bathroom mirror / sink. We asked for it to be replaced & when we returned to our room later that day, it was still […] out. Figured it would be replaced the next day...nope. The Sofia was perfect. I was traveling for business but had my 6 year old with me. We were close to the Convention Center and the New Children's Museum. Room is tiny. Staff are friendly. Overall good except (1) a few times couldn't connect to WIFI because there were too many people logging on and (2) I was charged for "water" and other things they did not specify for $8/day. First time I had to pay for "water " on top of whatever I paid through Hotels.com.
