Latham Hotel - New York

I don't know where to start! My daughter and I arrived at 11pm after a flight from LA we were tired and just wanted to go to bed, when we got into the room there was water all over the floor as the bar fridge had been leaking, there was no power point in the bathroom and the shower curtin had been cut to fit over the taps? All night there was slamming […] doors and phone's ringing,we were scared as I also felt the door to our room was not very secure, also in the corridor there were wires hanging from the ceiling, after a night of no sleep we went to an internet cafe to try and find other accommodation as there was not much available we ended up booking a hotel in New Jersey. The abroad phone number on our Hotels.com paperwork kept saying this number is no longer available so I thought I would call and try to get some sort of refund when we got home. When we went back to the Latham to check out of the Latham the front desk did not seem to care or even ask why we were leaving after only 1 night as we had booked for 6 nights? When we got back home we called the 1800 number to complain all we were told is you should of read the reviews and also the fact it is a low rating hotel what did we expect, The trip was for my daughters 21st so felf very let down that the hotel was in such bad condition. I suggest Hotels.com take this Hotel off the site as I would hate anyone else to have that horrible experience. Lisateave

First off it wasn't a hotel it's a ______ shelter. They rent out rooms, shared bathroom with the entire floor. It was so horrible I work to hard to stay at a freaking shelter. It was suppose to be a romantic night with my fiancée it was so bad I couldn't even stay we ended up getting another hotel uptown because there wasn't anything available in the […] area that we needed. Never again is all I'm say. I will read reviews before I book anything again. I also want to add I don't feel as if I'm better than anyone but I work hard and I wanted a nice night away. Lisateave

I would not want to stay in this Hotel for more than one night - and that too only if I were desperate (as I was) for a room for a night at a reasonable cost. The room was clean enough but the window openned to a blank wall and the Hotel is pretty old and musty.

My friends and I went to a concert, so we were only in the hotel for a few hours at the most. The shared bathroom did not have any toilet paper, though we did find some in our room after looking around for a bit. I wish we had been informed where things were. The hallway also smelled very unpleasant, and it stayed that way all weekend. Other than those […] two things, the hotel was clean and very close to several places to eat and a lot of small stores to shop in. Lisateave

Disappointed mainly because I called two days prior to arrival to make sure I secured two double beds. On the phone I was told that is what I would have. Upon check-in, I was told that I have a twin bed with a trundle. Huh?... I was eventually 'upgraded' to one double bed. Only stayed one night, which was wayyyyy too long! Never again!

I love it the hotel was very nice and my room was clean and confortable.The yong blond hair receptionist (Sorry I don't remember her name) was very helpful and polite. Thanks for everything I may come back next year for my aniversary again. Thanks again!

Except for the receptionist who said I didn't have any reservation, when in fact she mixed-up my first and last names, and when I showed her my printout and receipt, she was visibly irritated. I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness of the bathrooms. It suited my needs for my three night stay and was very close to important locations, including two subway stations. The night staff were not very nice at the front desk, but after speaking with the manager, he more than made up for it. During the day, what this functional hotel lacks […] in luxor, it makes up with friendly staff and a convenient location. Lisateave

We read all the comments so we knew what we were getting into. Room was immaculate and had a microwave, refrig, small tv and table and 2 chairs. We got a room with a bath. But no air conditioning unit so I imagine it would be very uncomfortable in the summer. No headboard, drapes, or wall hangings; linoleum floor. Room was tiny but we didn't need much […] space for the one night we were staying. Old fashioned claw bathtub with plumbing modified to include a shower. This hotel is very bare bones! But for someone looking for a clean, convenient, relatively inexpensive place to lay your head, this works. Lisateave

Great location and the cheapest hotel we could find. We selected a double room online but were given a twin (one of which was a camp bed) Warm water most of the time. Undeniably excellent location for sightseeing.

Looked like a prison. The prices qouted by the representative I spoke with was higher than the prices the hotel had listed. I think also that it was too expensive for that small space. Im glad I only stayed there one night.

I travel to NYC for business and I happened to book a room in Latham for 1 night. Never seen a hotel like this before. Really old building, it's ok if it is well maintained. Tiles in the halway and rooms that make creeky sounds at times when you step on them. No carpet anywhere as shown in the pictures. Could smell cigaretter and other HIGHER smokes […] in the hallaway. Bed in the room os the smallest and cover with plastic sheet. Hair on the room flloras and the bed. When I called the help desk, they said someone will be there, nobody showed up. The room was cold Heat's not working i guess. I didn't even unpack or remove y shoes. Left right away to a different hotel. Latham said they can't reimburse as i was already paid for. Ok so I booked the Latham Hotel because of its price and I read all of the reviews and still booked this hotel. As I entered the hotel 5 hours before check in, I was greeted by a friendly clerk and she let us check in before 3 p.m. Because we has arrived so early to the city. We politely asked If we could upgrade to a private bathroom and she happily […] agreed. I think a shared bathroom would be difficult and very inconvenient. So pay the extra cash and go for private bathroom! The elevator was working perfectly and we were on our way to the 6th floor. Our room was clean and there wasn't any of the bed bugs people had previously wrote on their reviews. Everything was clean and room service came by everyday to tidy the room u. The bathroom was clean as well! There was a flat screen t.v., a fridge and a microwave too! The location is the best part of this hotel. It's right on the middle of it alll!! I loved NYC!!! And this place was comfortable and not too bad on the price! I'd go back :) Lisateave

This place location is unbelievable, I went with my family, its not a five star place, but for the price is a excelent deal. You hear at night garbage trucks and people working, I wouldn'nt suggest to stay more than 2-3 days specially with kids. Great value for the money. Staff is OK, Beds are OK, Pillows not good, so, bring your own, parking coupons […] work fine and is not a fuzzy deal.I definitely stay again. Lisateave

Good points. Hotel reception was very friendly and it is conveniently located. Bad Points. We chose the Latham because of a last minute trip to NYC. We were looking for inexpensive and the options were limited. Unfortunately the room was not comfortable at all. A double bed that was really two twins stored one above the other and they were uncomfortable. […] Heater was always on so the AC, which was overly loud, needed to be going. We've stayed in the Hotel 17, which was comparably price and found it much more comfortable, even with a shared bath. We've decided to pay more rather than return to the Latham. Lisateave

This was my first time in NYC, and my first time going on a trip by myself. Being a college student, money was tight. The Latham was just what I needed - and if you are considering this hotel it is all a matter of perspective. The staff which has been described as 'rude' and 'unhelpful' I would describe as just chill and laid back. They aren't going […] to give you that phony shiny smile you get at the radisson, but they help when you ask for it, and they do their jobs well. The room was small but had everything that I needed. I did a shared bathroom, and occasionally I had to wait for someone else to get done, but if you get upset about things like that you really just need to not take life to seriously. The bathroom was clean and well designed, and right across the hall from my room. I did occasionally have noise issues, there was one time I could hear people yelling at each other for about 10 minutes, and another when I heard people talking, but not at unreasonable hours. I think my only real issue is that they should invest in better pillows. The pillows are super flat and stiff, and just having a good pillow would have increased the comfort dramatically. I can't speak to the bedding because I brought my own, which I safely contained and washed immediately upon returning home just in case ( I didn't see any signs of bedbugs, but gotta stay careful.) So besides that, this hotel was awesome for the price. Very laid back, I was able to relax, and it was a great central hub for exploring the city. If you want a private room right in midtown and can't afford a bunch of money, and don't mind sharing a bathroom with others, this is definitely the route to go. As long as you can handle issues like a mature adult and don't let small inconveniences ruin a trip you'll enjoy your stay without a doubt. I would definitely stay there again. Lisateave

My bath room didn't had a outlet.... It tells everything. The room was constantly overheated.

The hotel does show its age, but it is clean and safe. If you get a room with a shared bath it is not that bad a situation - and you save even more money. You're not spending your day in the bathroom. The location is perfect within easy walking distance of great shopping and the subway. Good value for a very basic hotel in a great central location.

After reading other reviews I was concerned about what I would find when I checked in. I would rate this hotel somewhere between a very good hostel and a low grade hotel. It was clean except for the overhead fan that was covered in dust. Turning that on would have been a disaster. The hotel would benefit greatly from adding some lamps in the rooms. […] There was no way to read in bed . That may be less popular than it once was but most hotel provide some lighting other than the overhead. It was an acceptable place to stay for the week-end but very basic. Lisateave

Went for a few days the rooms are small but did not care as I we used it for was to sleep good price staff was friendly and helpful not for someone who wants all the bells and such

Don't be fooled this is not a hotel. It is an city homeless shelter. IT"S IT FILTHY AND THE STAFF ARE ALL LIARS AND THIEVES>

Safe decent room. Good Cheap hotel room. Can't go wrong if that's the area you need to be in.

Admittedly, I was originally daunted by Latham's low price and amazing location but after reading through hundreds of the reviews and calculating my options, I booked it. I could not be happier. The location is perfect. Right on 5th Ave and 28th St. Easy walking distance to subway stations, 34th Street (as in Miracle on), Times Square, Korea town, shops, […] restaurants and what have you. The room was clean if sparse and was perfect for my needs (a place to store luggage and sleep.) The hotel staff were super polite and friendly. The shared bathrooms: not as bad as I expected. I lived in the dorms and expected a similar set up with multiple showers and toilets shared by everyone on the floor. That's pretty frightening for a young woman. What I found was a single, clean, well maintained bathroom with toilet, sink and shower and best of all: a big fat lock on the door. Latham Hotel is what it is--utilitarian. I would stay again. i really like the hotel and the staff its was a great stay the only problem i had was the last night i was there the cable did not work but overall it was a good place

My stay here was very comfortable. The room was a very good size for a short stay. The bathrooms were shared but very clean and there was not much of a wait to use them.

Location is great as far as where it is to shopping/sightseeing...not a horrible neighborhood but not upscale. But staff was friendly (if they could all be like Chris that would be great!!). And they let us check our bags in early for free and then for a $1 a bag we were allowed to leave them there on the day of departure so that we could explore the […] city bagless! Linoleum floor, keys to door, really needs renovated!! But compared to what we would have payed at any other place that weekend it was worth it!!! Lisateave

I was so excited to go down to NYC for my birthday weekend and when i found The Latham Hotel I was excited to be in that area and by the pictures of the rooms i knew it was going to be standard for the price of the room. Boy, i was so beyond wrong...Not only are you sleeping on fold up cots that are shoved together to make a "double" bed, the springs […] are shooting out of them. Also dont try and roll over towards the middle of the bed because you will fall right on the floor because the beds are on wheels. So, the room must have been an old kitchen because it was lenomium floors, and if you think your gonna get a comforter then you're wrong you will get a 12X12 scratchy 1/2 inch thick "fleece" blanket. You have to leave the windows wide open all night because the heater is on FULL BLAST and there is no way to turn it up or down. But you will love when you go to open your window and all you see is brick in front of you because each side of the bulding is about less than one inch away from the buildings on either side of it so there is NO VIEW. Another fun tidbit, when you walk into the hotel you will notice two desks, and the first day i didnt think anything of it but then i became suspicious of what was going on. Its a welfare shelter...how do i know do you ask, because i went over and asked because i wanted to know what was going on. It is a place for women one welfare with children to stay a couple of nights and then leave if you could of seen the people coming in and out of this hotel you would be amazed and the screaming all through the night was ungodly. The hotel is mostly for the welfare people and they probnably have 1 rooms for actual people that are going on vacation trying to stay there. So, i went downstairs after the first night and i asked for my money back and that i was not happy and could not see myself there for another 3 nights and they clearly stated that i was not able to get a refund for "early check-outs" which really sucked because i didnt have Lisateave

This hotel is exactly what you would expect for the price: no more, no less. Don't expect any frills. Bring flip-flops for the shower. Don't be snobby about the single mothers on government assistance living there.

Hotels.com should NOT list this as a "hotel". Dirty and smells like smoke. I think NYC social services uses it to shelter homeless women. The worst hotel I have ever stayed in.

You get what you pay for. Hotel is similar to an old youth hostel. It's mainly filled with foreigners and the closet/curtains were falling apart. The building is old but the location is great. I would stay there again.

Not too expensive. And its in the city. I had a great time during my stay with friends.

If you can arrange somewhere else to stay, DO IT! You basically get what you pay for, the area may be ideal to you but it definitely isn't worth the stay. Non-smoking areas smelled like smoke and the staff weren't very friendly. Overall did have a good experience, spend the money and get a better hotel.

For someone on a budget, it was clean and well located mid-town, just 2 blocks to the subway. with quick access up- and downtown. The maid service was pleasant and efficient. It is an old hotel, with a claw-foot tub w/shower, and reasonably comfortable bed. The Lanham had elevators for easy access to floors, and a microwave and refrigerator in the  […] room. Lisateave

I checked in at 5pm on a friday and checked out at 6pm on that same friday. the room was extremely small. The shower was horrible. The curtain went around the tub and had holes manually cut in it for the water handles. The staff was very pleasant but that was the only plus to this hotel. I didn't like the hotel at all. Everything is old and outdated. I felt like being in a military dorm somewhere in a third world country.
