Hotel Ranga is a fabulous place for a getaway outside of Reykjavik. Upon our arrival we were greeted by a welcoming and friendly Staff. They were quite attentive and helpful. We had enquired about taking a tour and they made all the arrangements. The Manager took time to introduce himself personally to all the guests. We had a nice chat and he offered […] some great suggestions of places to explore based around what we had planned for the day. There is a Cozy bar area that offers happy hour every day. And dont forget to make time for the outdoor jacuzzi to relax and take in the beautiful views. A perfect end to any day, aside from seeing the Northern Lights! Oh, and the staff will wake you(upon your request) any time during the evening so as not to miss them! We highly recommend a stay at the Hotel Ranga. You won't be disappointed. Lisateave

This hotel lives up to its reputation of being the best in Iceland and is acknowledged as such by locals as well as international travellers. Nothing is too much trouble as is exemplified by the manager, who talks to everyone individually during dinner, ensuring that their wishes are met, making recommendations and in so doing showing a genuine interest […] in his guests. The staff as a whole is very attentive, both day and night, for if you choose to be told of Northern Light activity you will be called whenever it is appropriate. The rooms vary in size and we were pleased we had opted for a superior room. Ours was actually ultra superior, being the North American Suite. Its decor was truly unique! Attention to detail was in evidence throughout, down to the coffee machine in the room. Dinner is excellent and is recognised as such by most locals we met in advance of our visit. It's a pity that breakfast, although good, was not of the same standard as far as the hot dishes were concerned. Lisateave

Wonderful hotel, with an amazing restaurant, staff, and hot tubs! Couldn't have had a nicer stay there and was a class above any other hotel we stayed at in Iceland. You will also have a great chance to see the northern lights here due to its remote location.

Good atmosphere and buzz at this hotel. Staff couldnt do enough to make stay comfortable. Wake up call if lights appear and true to their word they did. We had early check out so hotel arranged breakfast box to take with us - sandwich yoghurt chocolate fruit coffee amd juice!

Very Nice hotel and very friendly and helpful team. Rooms not huge and, as we had 3 in a deluxe room with bed settee, - quite tight. Hotel is great spot to see nothern lights as its so isolated (although the lights experience can be ruined by the stupidity of other guests using flash on cameras or driving their cars using headlights to the car park […] edge - so they can sit inside and dont get cold...unbelievable!). But the isolation does mean you tend to spend quite a lot of time in the hotel in winter as its so dark much of the day. Its a long way from anything else and adding a gym and a swimming pool and the hotel would make the difference to make this a 5. Food good, but a limited repeating menu. Just spent 4 days at Ranga. For Icelandic hotels it seems to be very nice. Front desk staff/concierge most helpful and coordinated. Room cleaning service was inconsistent in what they would replace as far as toiletries and taking away used dishes etc. Overall a very pleasant stay, but some would be a bit surprised at the "Great Hotels of the World" […] designation, as regards the services and the feel of the property, which is more like a very nice rustic mountain lodge in WY, not a luxury hotel. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere and it's one of the best places to watch the northern lights. The hotel staff is very helpful, and offered usitinerary of places of interest nearby. Breakfast is also good in the restaurant, and dinner is equally good there. Over all a very positive experience.

The good stuff ! The hotel is of a good standard, rooms of a decent size, hotel staff friendly and helpful, and the food was of a good quality- but beware a meal with a drink will cost in excess of £50 a head. The not so good stuff ! It would be wrong to assume ( If like us ), you are going away to see The Northern Lights. We have just returned having […] studied the best time of the year to see the lights ( End Sept- March ), but didn't see a thing. We spent 4 nights at The Ranga which is miles from anywhere, so very little to do. The hotel offer a wake up facility which you tick on a daily basis to be woken should the lights come, but this is questionable as we heard the Manager talking to other guests stating that the night before you could see the lights, although it was of a low standard. This was very disappointing as we did not receive a call, but kept our curtains open so we would have a clear view should we have been lucky. I guess my point is, if you want a quiet hotel with quality food, this would be a great stay. However, if like us you are going solely to see " The Lights ", think hard as in no way can this be sold as a Northern Lights trip. Lisateave

We were a little disappointed by the room - particularly given the price. The bedding and curtains were tired and the walls were bare. That said, the rest of the hotel met all our expectations - the restaurant was excellent and the staff very attentive.

Very enjoyable stay. Relaxed for an upmarket hotel. Good location and very helpful staff. Really good restaurant food and choice of drinks available. No robes in the junior suites as you have an indoor bathroom jacquzzi but it would be nice to have robes so you can use the outdoor hot tubs.

A very nice hotel with great service, food and amenities. Frederick (the owner) is particurlarly hospitable and is quite visible, taking extra time with the guests to ensure they are happy with the hotel. A real treat.

A bit expensive but well located if you are interested in seeing the Golden Circle. The breakfast was wonderful and very comprehensive. An absolute magnificent experience the hotel met all our needs. The only negative experience was that I couldn't rate the restaurant as much as others do. Overpriced and does not vary. I had the Lobster soup starter which to be honest was a disappointment, and the main course I had the surf and turf which I had requested to be done medium. As I ate […] through the lamb it was neigh on raw in the middle and I left it. The maitre d' blamed it on the the thickness of the meat.....ummmmm I thought medium done would apply irrespective of the thickness! Breakfast was really well done. We stayed here for five days. The sevice was excellent throughout- very high standard combined with friendly & knowledgable staff. The owner was always around, friendly & informative. On arrival we were upgraded free of charge to a junior suite with a japanese theme which was gorgeous. The breakfast buffet is included and is fantastic with a wide range […] of hot & cold dishes. The staff were fantastic, polite & friendly. On finding out I was vegetarian the chef offered different vegetarian dishes every night. The meals were great, the lounge was very comfortable to sit & have a coffee or lunch. A 4 wheel drive is highly recommended in Winter!

Hotel Ranga was a brilliant choice for our stay in Iceland last weekend. We went specifically to see the Northern Lights and we were not disappointed as we saw them on both saturday and Sunday nights. The hotel was an ideal location as light pollution is very low. He told us to always ask at reception when we were going out during the day as they could recommend the best route and attractions. We did this and they were all briliant. We were due to set off to the airport at 0430 on Tuesday morning to catch our flight but when we told the owner this on Monday evening he expressed concern as a major storm was heading our way. As a result and after the hotel staff phoning the met office for weather updates, we set off to the airport at about 9.45pm and headed to a guest house at the airport that the owner had arranged for us to stay at with no charge. We really do intend to go back and visit again as we were so impressed both with the country and our hotel - fantastic. Lisateave

Great service in a really friendly hotel. We saw the lights 3 nights running thanks to a wake up call from the staff. The best thing about Ranga though is that it's miles out of Reykjavik in the middle of the country and for me the sunrises that last half the morning are just as good as the lights. Driving for miles and seeing virtually no-one, the […] Gulfoss falls and geysers that you don't have to go on a tour bus to see is great. I would recommend a decent car, we had a Nissan micra, which was fine but I would have been happier in a decent 4 x 4. The restaurant at Hotel Ranga is expensive but Iceland generally is. I'd recommend a plain but good restaurant called Arhus in Hella about 5 miles away; pizza and burgers but also good fish and pasta as well. That way a big splurge on the gourmet food at Ranga is easier to manage as a treat. Be warned that even the cheapest wine at Ranga like Torres or Mateus Rose is £30+ a bottle. We paid £72 for 2 veggie main courses and a half bottle of Torres; beautiful food but I really am used to a glass of reasonable wine with a great meal. Hotel Ranga is stunning, unless you have unlimited funds prepare for the expensive stuff but the free stuff on its doorstep makes it well worth it. Lisateave

What can i say about Hotel Ranga. Well we booked at Ranga after reading reviews on line and we wanted to see the Northern Lights and new the hotels location was perfect for this. On arrival we were told we'd been upgraded to a suite which had a balcony at no extra expense to us, it was the oriental suite and its querky character just added that extra […] touch to our stay. The room was extremely well kept for the three nights and so quiet on an evening we actually felt like we were alone in the middle of no where. The staff at the hotel were always very pleasant and welcoming and a personal hello from the manager went along way to making us feel welcome. Two things i would definitely suggest doing if your staying at the hotel are hiring a car as its quite remote and putting your name on the Northern Lights wake up list, we did and were lucky enough to see them on the final night. All in all a fantastic hotel that we'll be visiting again one year in the summer. Lisateave

Stayed in Hotel Ranga as part of my wife's birthday celebration. Went to see the Northen Lights and they obliged on 2 nights out of 3 - wow !!! Hotel is superb with very friendly and helpful staff and it's perfectly situated (in the middle of nowhere) for the darkness you need to see the Aurora properly. Bar staff advised us to visit a beautiful […] bay full of icebergs (Jokulsarlon) and duly obliged in cleaning up some glacial ice we brought back and we used it that night to cool our Icelandic vodkas - you can't do that in England !!! A great hotel in a great location. Hotel Ranga gave us great access to all of South West Iceland. The peaceful location was great to come back to after a day of sightseeing. You can play some snooker, jump in the 'Hotpot' to freshen up and the massive upstairs lounge was a great place to chill with a beer. Eating at the resturaunt is expensive, we […] did it for one night only, but the food was amazing! Expect to pay around £15 for an entree and £35.00 for a main, but saying that Iceland is an expensive place to holiday, everything is expensive in Iceland, so be prepared for this. Despite the cost, we have already booked another trip back to Hotel Ranga to see the northern lights, its expensive but its worth it. Oh and lastly, you'll definitely need a hire car to stay here. The Hotel is about a 1.5 hr drive from Keflavik Airport and public transport is very limited. Lisateave

Ranga is a picturesque, comfortable and clean hotel. We booked & paid several months in advance. All rooms have a view of Mt Hekla or the best salmon river. Hotel Ranga was the best hotel we stayed at on our Honeymoon! They offered us free room upgrade even before we told them that! ;-) Room are nice and clean, with jacuzzi and outside hot spots! The staff is really helpfull too... The variety of food at breakfast is superb - no complains at all for sure! Highly recommended lovely 4 star hotel...

Hotel Ranga liegt zwar an einem idyllisch an einem schönen Fluss, die weitere Umgebung aber ist eher öde. Die Anlage ist originell gebaut, die Standardzimmer eher klein, ebenso die Betten (sowohl Länge als auch Breite). Die Begrüssung war kühl und unpersönlich, ebenso die Verabschiedung. Good hotel in a great location but also quite pricey. To understand the price you absolutely have to enjoy all the things you paid for - which means, use the jacuzzi in your room and definately use the hot tub outside. Great breakfast buffet!
