Hotel Grano de Oro - San Jose

Great hotel with excellent service. Loved the history behind it. One caveat, the concierge told me not to do any walking in the neighborhood after dark, so the neighborhood might not be the best (even though it's close to some great sights).

This beautiful boutique hotel is a home away from home. Front Desk Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, many speak English. Wait staff are excellent. Rooms are clean and spacious. Hotel is beautifully designed to provide a calm and relaxing space. I would stay no where else in Sanjose

It was an absolutely beautiful hotel. Walking distance to downtown San Jose. We didn't have too much interest in San Jose as we just stayed over for a layover but this hotel was amazing and the food was to die for. Would recommend 100%

Beautiful and comfortable hotel right in the centre of San Jose. I bit pricey though for what it provides. The shower is simple (I was expecting a larger one at least) and the size of the rooms not as big as I thought.

The property is amazingly beautiful. The room we stayed in (the standard) was a bit small. Windows open up to courtyard filled with tropical foliage. Beautifully appointed courtyard restaurant. Lovely rooftop jacuzzi. One slightly downside is the location. A bit out of the way from the city center, but since San Jose offers little anyway, not a very […] big deal. We stayed 2 nites and ate breakfast and dinner in the dining room. Both meals were excellent. We each had sea bass, the one with orange sauce was the the winner of the two choices. Recommend this boutique hotel. Staff are very service oriented and helpful for english speakers.

our stay in San Jose was special because of staying at the Hotel Grano. Lovely decor, friendly service.

Hotel Grano de Oro occupies a turn of the 20th Century mansion. It is quite beautiful and excellently cared for. It has several enclosed gardents a garden restaurant and excellent, some small, rooms with all the amenities. We stayed two nights and found the hotel to be excellent in every way. Wonderful service and restaurant...arrived later afternoon and was looking forward to sitting on the hotub deck...This is the only area that desperately needs attention..only one hot tub was operating...both were worn..the fountain was not operational,,I would redo it and put one larger hot tub in

This hotel and restaurant were very nice, probably the nicest in the whole area. The restaurant had a delightful setting in and around a beautiful courtyard in the middle of town. the only downside was the lack of noise insulation between rooms. Hotel was exquisite. The perfect end to a week long stay of ruffing it up on the coast. We were very relaxed and enjoyed every minute. The restaurant was very pricey but well worth it. You wouldn't expect to find what's inside of this little boutique driving around the surrounding neighborhood (loud and dirty). But inside it is a lovely little oasis. It's location is very convenient relative to the airport, especially given the brutal traffic as you approach central San Jose. I have always wanted to stay here. I used to live in San Jose and went there frequently to eat. Great great place to stay. Super clean. Very fresh. Nice ambience. Felt luxurious. From working in hotels, I have a sense of when a hotel is well run. This hotel is it. I would actually compare it to the Fairmont Hotels in Canada. Top 4 Items - Excellent Service - Great atmosphere - Splendid food & beautiful indoor/outdoor restaurant - Wonderful rooms The service was outstanding in this hotel, I was warmly greeted with a cold fruit […] beverage, checked in early (provided me with a time as to when it would be ready) and asked to store my bags (and delivered them to the room as well). I ate an early lunch (wonderful food) and then the front desk let me know the room was ready. In the room I enjoyed the wonderful hard wood floors, clean (very clean) bathroom and room itself, warm tones and location of the room within the hotel (quiet). I then went for dinner in the restaurant (I recommend reservations) being a single traveler sometimes it's easier to pop in. They accommodated me and I had a wonderful dinner. The bartender wasn't the friendliest (my fault, I should have learned Spanish) but served drinks well :) The food was delicious, the owner happened to walk by and we had a brief chat, he was warm and friendly. Prior to bed, I asked for the front desk to check on my Interbus reservation and they did so without question. Though San Jose is not the safest place, I had no intention of walking around as I was leaving in under 20 hours (just 1 night lay over) but the front desk did point out some points of interest and mentioned safety and security that I needed to be mindful of. Small adequately appointed room in a neighborhood best left unexplored. Star of the hotel is its restaurant. Outstanding cuisine at both breakfast and dinner worthy of competing with NY's best.

Stayed at Grano de Oro on the weekend of Dec 3rd, great service, rooms quaint, kinda of a B&B kicked up a notch... Their restaurant was incredible, the dinning courtyard is also beautiful. We thought for the quality of the hotel and location it is truly a bargain. We would stay there again on our next San Jose trip.

This place is beautiful and the staff was amazing. We had room 1 and it was quaint and sweet and lovely and clean and comfortable and refreshing. The restaurant was gorgeous and the service and food was devine. We brought our own bottle and there was not corkage becuase we were staying at the hotel. Buy wine at duty free, check in to your great room […] and enjoy a nice meal with your wine. I wish this hotel was closer so I could just go occasionally to enjoy it. Lisateave

Beautiful Hotel, your right by San Jose district, as a American/Colombian I know how to travel in bad areas, your limited if your not in a car. By foot you have about 4 block radius before going into downtown where you will have to be on your full senses and aware of your surroundings! If you are going on business and dont want to be late, best Hotel […] in area, everyone speaks english and good english! If your looking to shop and eat, i recommend looking near Santa Ana which is about 20 minutes away but might be pricey! Lisateave

This hotel is beautiful and updated really nice with modern fixtures. The room was spectacularly clean and the restaurant was nice but very expensive for what it was. There is plenty of cheaper cuisine if you walk to the plaza (about a 10min walk to the beginning of it and about an hour 30min round trip if you walk the length and back). There are also […] plenty of fast food places in the plaza area. Overall our stay was very quiet and relaxing and it was a nice place to stay on your way in our out of Costa Rica through San Jose. Beautiful Hotel. Standard rooms are terrible but Deluxe rooms are very nice. Had to upgrade and pay extra because I reserved standard room and was quite unpleasantly surprised by how "substandard" they are. The employees are great but management is rigid and cold. Restaurant is also excellent.

Out of the busy and noisy center of the city, It was quiet and impeccably clean and excellently maintained. The service staff was excellent and very helpful.

This Hotel is very well kept up. It has a great restaurant and the staff is very nice and friendly. It is centrally located and it only 5-10 min cab ride from all the hotspots. It is very quiet also. The room was extremely clean and I would come back here again to stay!

Hotel Grano de Oro and its restaurant are one of the top in their class in San Jose, Costa Rica. The rooms mix the colonial and modern cultures present in the country. Hotel Grano De Oro is a gem in the city of San Jose. Aside from the rooms and hotel being beautiful, and the staff being friendly, the restaurant on premises is fantastic. Best food i had on my entire trip. Plus its a historic hotel. Nothing better than getting the feeling of a time forgotten. If you have to stay in San Jose this is your spot.

After traveling around Costa Rica on our honeymoon, Hotel Grano de Oro was a great place to end our trip on a good note. We only stayed one night while waiting to catch our flight out the next morning, but its definitely a pleasant place to stay. The […] building features many open aired corridors and beautifully landscaped patios/courtyards, which keeps fresh air flowing throughout the hotel (also very green!) The staff were all friendly and helpful. Location is excellent, located just a short walk from the city center. Some people have complained about the neighborhood, but we felt perfectly safe walking just two blocks to the main Paseo Colon during the daytime. Definitely beat staying in one of the standard chain hotels near the airport, and it was nice to see a little of the city during the afternoon we were in town. I would highly recommend this hotel. In the part of San Jose we were in I wasn't expecting anything nice- but this hotel was clean and well kept. I was disappointed to hear that the only computer in the hotel was the small old laptop at the front desk - but then discovered they had free wireless! My husband and I spent a night here and loved it. We had been traveling in remote towns and a night in this hotel was true luxury. We were in San Jose for a day and a half. This hotel was great.--beautiful, quaint and quiet. It was nice to get away from the hussle and bussle of downtown. Great food in the restaurant too!

Wonderful elegantly appointed hotel with subdued elegance. Staff is very helpfull and we enjoyed our stay. The restaurant is delicious and the service first class. The only dissapontment is the location of the hotel is in a cogested not particularly clean and hospitable area of the city.
