The Buckingham Athletic Club & Hotel - Chicago

Checking in and parking at this hotel was complicated and stressful. There is no curb to park at while checking in OR vallet. If it was not for David at the fron desk going above & beyond to help me.....I would have left.

This is a hotel located on the 40th floor of a commercial building. The rooms were fine and the free breakfasts were very good. McCormick Place is a little more than a mile away, a pleasant walk.

Everything about this place was awesome, absolutely no complaint. If you are in town as a tourist it is on the loop, easy to get to and from the airport by the blue line. The breakfast was really good. If you get the chance stay here it is well worth it. Don't forget the amazing views of the city from the 40th floor.

This hotel really caters to the business traveler. We went for a weekend. The included weekend breakfast was a skimpy failure. We asked for more yogurt and the told us they didn't have anymore. Just stayed at the Buckingham for the second time. Tried it the first time based on hotels.com reviews and we're really glad we did. Right off the LaSalle stop of the Blue Line, next to the VanBuren Brown Line stop, and easy walking distance to most of the places we wanted to go to in the Loop. We had a difficult time trying to locate this hotel! Once we found it, it was fine, although taking 3 different elevators from the garage to the room was not convenient. Also was no valet in the garage when we arrived so we had a bit of a problem getting into the hotel. Very nice once we got there, but we would not stay there again.

We stayed in 4008 - request it if you can.The view looks toward the lake and you can see everything from Shedd to Navy Pier. And you are no more than a $6 cab ride to any of the main sites. You'll have to go straight to the parking garage; right as 290 ends take your 1st left on S. Financial Pl. Its more like a big driveway than a street, but follow signs for "Public Parking" down the steep hill, pull up close to the garage door and it will open. We would stay there every time we go to Chicago if we can continue to get as great a deal as we did. It was definitely a five star hotel. They were very nice and the restaurant was very accommodating. Loved everything about it!!

This 21 rooms hotel is located on the top of Chicago Stock Exchange. To get to hotel you have to use 2 elevators. One will get you to 39 floor and another from 39th to 40th. The area is perfect for people who like to explore city by walking and for those who need transportation as train station and metro are adjacent to building. Room decor is 70th […] -retro, but view of the harbor from our room was unbelievable. I guess we were lucky to have a room with a direct view of the Buckingham fountain. The hotel has complimentary breakfast and athletic club. To get there you have to go down to the lobby on 2 elevators, pass station with security guard, get to another elevator and go to the 3 floor. The sport complex included pool, jacuzzi, showers, sauna, massage, basketball court, all types of machines, power nap room. All made to the higher executives standards. Note for family vacationers: no kids allowed except for a few hours on saturday and sunday. Hotel has their own parking but very costly $37. You can park across the street for $14. If you plan to have dinner nearby - forget it. As this is business district of Chicago most of the places closing soon after lunch. I do not recommend to order food via room service. They are using generic services with a vendor who barely speaks english. The best food from our order was salad, probably because no one touched it. Lisateave

The gym is only open until 9PM unfortunately. By the time I got back from business meetings, it was too late to workout. Next time I would opt for hotel with a less extensive gym but one that is open longer.

Albeit a strange hotel, it was a fun place to stay. It's literally in the heart of the stock exchange, so therefore on a Sunday, it was completely (and somewhat eerily) empty. It's right on the El Loop, so you can get to and from Midway very easily.The rooms were nice and big and the 40th floor view was beautiful, but everything was bought in the 90's, […] but it was the best of the best in the 90s (or early 2000s). The TV was not flat screen, but it had a nice sitting area, and big bathroom. We did use the athletic center twice, and enjoyed it. It's a member-only club, so you feel like you are in their space, but it was nice. Pool, jacuzzi, steam/sauna room, and a weight room. It wasn't the nicest weights, but sufficient. Breakfast was very good, and was free for me. I don't know if I would stay here again, but it was fun, and it was cheap on a Sunday evening, and close to the El -- so it was a win-win. Lisateave

Dated and very odd set up of the hotel witch Made everything harder. Children were very disappointed in saying they had a pool but the hours for the pool made it unusable. A good sleep because not a lot of people. Nice view and room size.

Very interesting hotel. Sitting in a Chicago Stock Exchange building with no exterior signage indicating a hotel is inside, the "hotel" is the 40th floor, and affiliated with an athletic club of the same name. Excellent breakfast, great views, superb athletic club. Security a bit cumbersome, but you get used to it.

I was amazed by the Buckingham and would hands down stay there again in the future. The price compared to other hotels of its caliber left me waiting for "the catch", but it never came. Downtown Chicago has some treats in its historic buildings, but it also has the Buckingham Athletic Club and Hotel. On the 40th floor, our room was one of 20 or so, and it looked south from lake to river. A large room, comfortably furnished, and a delight to return to. Arriving on Sunday meant that many of the dining opportunities were closed as they service the downtown businesses, but we were able to find some great eatery's, and choice expanded during the business week. Ceres in the Board of Trade Building should be a place to target, as well as the Italian Village, Henri's and Gage, all recommended by the hotel and wonderful experiences. Would recommend to any who are looking for a great base for a holiday, or a business visit. The hotel was very secure and as a solo female traveler in downtown Chicago, it is a plus. While you do take two elevators up to the hotel rooms, it is easy and everyone helps you out. Downsides: location as a single women at night is not desirable; difficult to navigate complex elevator system to get from room to gym and breakfast; gym felt not too clean and hotel decor is dated.

We were in town to climb the Willis Tower and it was an excellent location within walking distance to the Tower, but the South loop location is kind of seedy.....finding the "lobby" or front desk if you will is kind of hidden. The security guards of the building had to point us in the right direction to where it was, not the easiest hotel to recognize […] and to get into - being that the building is the Chicago Board of Trade building...overall a very neat place to stay. It was worth it and it allowed me into a location I have wanted to go to - the exercise area right over the Congress expressway....very neat. Great hotel but better for a single on business than a couple on vacation. Not for families. Underground parking hard to find; needed turn-by-turn directions from front desk. No help with luggage; had to make 2 trips. When you park in garage, find the correct spaces because each section is for a different purpose. Need to get scanned into another section […] of garage to find elevator to take to first floor. Need security to scan you through gate to check-in. Then you get 1 room key with a device about the size of a smart phone that will gain you access through the gates, elevators, room, etc. If w/another person, stay together when you come/go because you will beep yourself in and then hand it to your partner so they can beep through exits/entrances. Room gorgeous, faced north but with bayview window could also see east/west. Took about 45 pics of view, including sunrise over Lake Michigan. Robes in room. Huge tub, BF and I both used it once. Expensive mini-bar so byob. NO mini-fridges available as advertised. Mini-bar "fridge" about 50*F, not cold. Breakfast great (but not staff) on weekdays in athletic club (buffet style w/eggs, potatoes/peppers/onions, meats, waffles, fruit, hot/cold cereal, yogurt, granola, toast, juice, coffee, etc.) Lap pool had 4 lanes, about 4 ft deep. One huge HOT tub with 2 sections (one standing only and one with seats). Loved the steam room and sauna, but sad we couldn't sit together since they are in locker rooms. Can't add more; 1500 only. I have never understood why pricier hotels charge exhorbitant fees for wi-fi, breakfast, and replace the dozens of cable channels with an overpriced pay-per-view menu. This is NOT the case at the Buckinham Athletic Club Hotel. Everyone gets a 40th floor room with spectacular views of the city, free breakfast, free wifi, and plenty of cable channels […] (but on an outdated CRT TV). And the big, heavy brass key was a nice retro touch. The location is a little quirky - all the rooms are on the top floor of a financial building, and you have to transfer elevators to go all the way up, and getting down to the 3rd floor breakfast requires an elevator change in the lobby. I didn't use the health club facilities, but I'd wager that not many hotels offer raquetball courts! The location is fantastic. You can take the Blue Line rail straight from O'Hare to less than a block from the hotel. You can take a bus or walk a few blocks to Michigan Avenue near Millenium Park. And with all of the security guards in the lobby for the financial building, you will feel extremely secure. All of this for less than what your average business-class hotel charges. I saved my company quite a bit by choosing this hotel instead of the hotel associated with the convention I was attending - not only on the rates, but on the free breakfast and wi-fi. If they outfitted all the rooms (there are only 21) with flat screen HD TVs, it would be absolutely perfect. Lisateave
