Castle Kona Reef , a Condominium Resort - Kailua-Kona

Not sure what I was expecting. Should have read more into "a Condominium Resort". Now I know that each "room" is someone's condo that they rent out. And is maintained by the property, but decorated by the owner. Our room was GOD awful, meaning bed was uncomfortable, decor was from 1982. On the plus side the room had free wifi and a washer/dryer/full […] kitchen. Thankfully we showed up at 4:59pm, the office closes at 5pm! Lots of elderly residents. Was nice sitting on the deck 20' from the ocean watching people surfing and seeing HUGE cruise ships park right in front of us. Lisateave

This was a great location and the condo was immaculate. It is located about 15 to 20 min. Cab ride from the airport. The only snag was that I needed an early check-in for a 10 am meeting, which is why I decided on these accommodations. After confirming, They could not accommodate the early check-in and I had to wait until their 3 pm check in. The staff […] handling the reception/check in was professional and really tried to help but could not. Finally at 2:45 pm, I was upgraded to an ocean view condo, which I appreciated and by that, time really needed. Next time, I'll ask about early check-in policy. Lisateave

The location is very convenient. We could find out many good restaurants nearby and shops for suveniors. However, this condo is owned by each different owners, so each room interiors are different and you can not look at it in advance. Our room was OK but the bed was not so much confirtable. We found this condo very clean and had a great view of the ocean. It's a short walk to all kinds of activites in town.

This place was ideal for us - oceanfront, close to restaurants, stores, dock, etc. A no-brainer there. Staff was friendly and helpful and quick to respond to requests. However, since these are individually owned condos, you might want to ask questions regarding the condo itself before booking if possible or at least expect that some units are much better […] than others. Our unit, while in great working order--even had a washer/dryer which came in handy-the furnishings and kitchen badly needed updating. We peeked into the unit next door one day when the cleaning staff was in there and the difference was night & day. The complex itself if beautifully maintained and the plus is free covered parking. We also received a club discount crard for the local grocery store which was a help. Grocery prices in Kona are horrendous, but hey, it's vacation so we didn't complain too much. It was one of the best vacations we had. Be sure to visit the onsite activities office. Lauren had some great ideas and I think she saved us money. Her recomendation for night snorkeling with the Manta Rays was the highlight of our trip. Highly recommend the Castle Kona Reef. Lisateave

Nice condo, easy walk to restaurants and other places. nice beach area but on ground floor not good air flow so a bit stuffy since you can't leave sliding door open at night for air. would suggest internet in condos as don't want to go to pool or lobby for access. Overall would recommend it.

This condo had a really good location, your right on the beach and very close to shops and restaurants. The unit I stayed in was in need of major updating with the kitchen and furniture and the place smelled kinda like an attic. Aside from that my 1 bedroom was large and had everything I needed. My only complaint was that when I opened one of the kitchen […] drawers a moth flew out and the same happened with I opened a cabinet so I'm guessing that nobody had stayed there for a while. We really enjoyed our 2 day stay at the Castle Kona Reef. Stunning views of the ocean from our balcony. Condo had everything that you needed. Kitchen, living room, really nice little bedroom etc. Was quiet and very relaxing too! Our only slight complaint was that the condo office seemed to have very limited hours. A week after our stay we returned, […] hoping to get another night's stay at the Castle Kona Reef but we couldn't locate anyone at this resort to talk to in person. If you stay in Kona and are considering cooking for at least part of the time, the Kona Reef is an excellent location. The room we stayed in (B15) was clean, the kitchen and appliances were clean (except for the rusty dishwasher). The assortment of pots and pans was extensive, even a spaghetti stainer and cork screw. All reconstruction from the tsunami […] seems to have been completed. Only issue we had was that the office closed early so we did a late arrival. We got our key from the box and followed the map to our room but we did not realize that there was a closer location to park at in the garage until the next day so we lugged our bags from the front parking lot which was far. Where we stayed there were stairs (1/2 flight) even if you took the elevator. Not a problem for us just the luggage. I would recommend that if you have a problem with stairs to call them and ask them for a room that does not have stairs. Also if you take a garden room and you get the end unit of B (B1, B11, B21, B31) you will hear traffic noise at night so you should bring ear plugs. In the unit I stayed in you did not hear traffic noise. Overall this place is walking distance to the shops and restaurants. Lisateave

The hotel is showing its age, but it's in a great location with walking distance to several bars and easy driving distance to many attractions. (much better than Hilo side) My only real complaint is that the A/C unit was very loud and, although it cooled the main room, it didn't reach the bedroom.

they closed the pool from mid july to mid August without informing anyone which really stunk since they had a hot tub which was one reason to stay there. They kind of made up for it by letting us use the royal kona hotel pool but really missed out on the hot tub and thought it was dumb they would redo the pool during the summer. I didn't like that we arrived by 9:30pm and there was already no one at the front desk. Checking in consisted of using a phone to call a number --- the person would then tell us which unit we got and a code to open a lock on our door to obtain the key to our unit. Everything went smoothly with that, so that's fine. Similar to many other "hotels" managed […] by the Castle Resorts & Hotels, these units all are individually owned, but when the owners are not using their vacation homes, these serve as "hotels" that people can stay at for a sum of money. With that said, our last stay with another Castle hotel just down the road was very nice, mainly because the owners of that unit has made the unit very comfy and cozy with cute decor. This unit, however, was very barebones. We had everything we needed, so that's okay, but what really bothered me was the fact that the floor probably hadn't been cleaned/mopped in God knows how long. Our feet became almost black after walking around the unit barefoot. As we walked in we were welcomed by two flies and a mosquito, all of which we eventually killed. So that's the bad on management's part. The best part about our stay was the washer and dryer (you get a travel size pack of laundry detergent). It's nice to schedule some nights at places with washer/dryer during a long trip so you don't have to pack so much clothes! And, the ocean is literally right in the backyard of our hotel, so that's a nice bonus. It's also walkable to the downtown Kona area. Lisateave

Great price for a good hotel. We had a one bedroom and one bathroom suite with a fold out for our teenage daughter. Though our room was a little outdated, but overall, was a good deal. Kitchen was nicely stocked for us to use. Hotel is close to the busy strip of Alii Drive. beautiful view of the of the ocean. Hotel staff was very nice and helpful. Great location with a fantastic view of the ocean. If that is all you are interested in, then this is the place for you. The room was decorated in early 1970s with cabinet covers about to fall off and really nasty carpet. The AC kept up in the living room, but couldn't cool the bedroom which was close enough to the street to hear everything going on […] through the night. Be sure you get a renovated unit, there is a huge difference. We were lucky, our unit had everything we needed, it even had washer and dryer in unit and you do not have to pay extra for it. Good luck!

My family and I stayed here for 5 days 4 nights and gotta say we loved it! we had our own bedroom and the children in the living room in their fold out sofa bed. The kitchen was a huge + I cooked breakfast, packed lunch and cooked dinner on a couple of nights.. the condo offered pots, pans, utensils, plates. My kids were excited to see a boogie board, […] there was an ice chest that we borrowed and couldn't be happier about free parking as well. the pool was very clean and the grounds were kept nicely. This is an older property that is showing it's age. They do an adequate job of maitenance. The rooms are smal but clean and comfortable. The setting is outstanding. For the price this more than met my needs.

This condo resort is in a great location right next to the ocean. There is no sandy beach between the resort and the ocean, but black lava... however there are several beaches just a few minutes drive away. The main Kona shops and restaurants are also just a few minutes north of this property. The pool and hot tub area is nice and well maintained and […] plenty of bbq units to grill on under a roof near the pool. The unit we stayed in had a small but full kitchen, family/dining room and one bedroom and one bathroom. There was a nice flat screen tv. The walls in the unit we stayed in could use new paint and the door casings were dated, worn and/or dirty. The price was reasonable, but this was not a Sheraton. Lisateave

our bedroom pillows smell bad (sweat) - bathtub was not completely clean - i am glad we only stayed two nights. it appears is a family business the front desk is only open from 9AM to 5PM - I arrived at the hotel at 11:30AM but the lady at the front desk told me that I have to wait until 3PM.

Although the locations was great, right next to the beach, our room was a real disappointment and not up to the standards that we had found in the Caste Kamaole Sands on Maui. The furnishings were cheap and the futon in the living room was uncomfortable and the only item to sit on while watching a very small, old TV set. Our bathroom really needs some […] updating. The kitchen was well supplied but the stove and fridge showed signs of water damage??? The hotel had some Tsunami damage, perhaps that contributed the problems with the service. This was a older condo but in excellent condition and very clean. It had a beautiful balcony that looks right out over the pool, beach and ocean. Beautiful sunsets and lots of surfers to watch. Close to shopping and restaurants.

This hotel was a great fit for our last night on the Big Island. I wish we could have stayed here longer, but in general we were camping. The place was very nice, clean, and had a great pool and hot tub. Good views of the ocean and close to downtown, which made for a great sunset and nice last evening out.

Despite the tsunami (!) that wrecked the ground-floor condos, we liked our stay, given special room rate, although if we were paying the regular rate I would have been unhappy with the quality of the room we were assigned. Great location re: walking distance to downtown area, nice staff (who kept us well-advised regarding the need for evacuation during […] the natural hazard) and well-kept grounds, but condo we were in had an ancient sofa whose cushions slid off every time you sat down and an old stove whose elements kept falling out of place. This place was perfect! Pay the extra $ for an ocean view. This is right on the coast and our first morning there a pod of spinner dolphins swam in and stayed for about 45 mins - what a show! The condominium was comfortable, had everything we needed, and was in a great locatioin right on the beach, and close enough to town that we could walk. The only negative thing was that the bed and pillows were not very comfortable. The bed was very hard, not firm but HARD!

The Kona Reef had an ideal location for access to restaurants, tourist activities and shopping in Kailua. The Kona Reef is an older condo/hotel and could use a little updating. Carpeting on outside walkways was very stained. Furnishings and paint in our unit was dingy. Bathroom was impossibly small. This facility is walking distance to many restaurants and the downtown district of Kailua/Kona. The facilities were very nice, safe and well taken care of - pool, grounds, outdoor grills, parking area. The condo was comfortable and had a good bed - we were in D13. It would have been nice to have a regular couch instead of a futon in the living room […] area. The bathroom was okay, but could use some updating. The kitchen had all the cooking supplies we needed for our stay. This is an ocean front condo, and you couldn't get any closer to the water without getting wet! We enjoyed the large lanai for our breakfast, with surfers, boats and the ocean to keep us entertained. There is only one air conditioner in the condo, so it was hard to get the bedroom cool, but there was a ceiling fan so we were fine. The only complaint I have is that the bedroom was light all night long from outside lighting. It could use some block out curtains/shutters to help keep it dark for sleeping. Other than that, I loved our condo and would go back and rent it again. The location in Kona and the proximity to a great ocean front view makes this a very appealing facility. Lisateave

Floor was filthy, bed sheets had holes in them,room curtains had holes.Very basic room, definitely not worth the money we were charged for this garden view room. Looked like no upkeep or maintenance had been done for some time.

My stay at the Kona Reef was fantastic. Being a Condo, we were able to go out and buy fresh fish and cook it outside on the grill, while making sides in the oven. We also stocked the fridge and made breakfast instead of going out every morning. It was pretty much like our own little apartment. The room also had free high speed internet as well as beach […] chairs and other beach gear for use. Also, we had an Ocean View Room, which they said had a "partial" Ocean View. Well, partial was pretty much full when you walked out on the balcony, and you had a really good view from the living room as well. Was also very convenient because you could walk to downtown Kailua to eat out, shop, and get drinks while enjoying an ocean view. Walking distance to the center of Kailuna-Kona. Very satisfied with the apartment. We staied at an other apartment the first time, which was not a nice apartment, but this one was perfect. Very different standard between the two aparments, with almost no difference in price. Recommend this place.

Nice outdoor grills, well supplied kitchen. Only complaint was the ac didnot cool the bedroom well. Great ocean view. Nice size unit. Would stay there again.

My wife and I stayed at the Kona Reef in June and July of 2010 and we were extremely happy with our choice. We expected a basic hotel room, what we actually got was an apartment suite with a fully stocked kitchen, washer-dryer and a living room with a view on the ocean. From what we were told, each individual unit is privately owned and decorated according […] to the taste of the owner. I would say we hit the jackpot on ours. Also, Kona Reef is within walking distance of the shopping core on Ali'i drive (and several restaurants), not to mention the condominium resort boasts very easy access to the ocean. We were very surprised at the great quality of this resort. Our room was wonderfull, and the on site managers very friendly, and doing a great job. We also enjoyed Stanton, security guard. very friendly and helpfull. What a refreshing stay, we will return.

The hotel had an exceptional ocean view complete with surfers and sunsets. The patio made for a pleasant breakfast. The unit was quite spacious. We really liked having a washer/dryer. The easy walk to waterfront restaurants was great. The staff was quite helpful. The unit needs more remodeling. The wall air conditioner was sufficient for everything […] except the bedroom. The original room we were given had a poor a/c unit. We arrived late so suffered through it that night. Management moved us the next day with no problem to another unit. The a/c worked great on the second unit. Great Condo resort, pool, barbeque area. Oean view was great! Location was great.

家にいるように快適に過ごせました。ただ一つ難点をいえば、お湯の量が限られているので日本にいるようにお湯を使えず突然水になった。昨年はそういうこともなく、快適に過ごせたので同じホテルでも部屋ごとに状態は違うのかもしれない。とはいえ、快適でした。

Wir hatten ein Condo mit Meerblick was sehr schön war, man konnte auch den Sonnenuntergang sehen. Keine direkten Bademöglichkeiten beim Hotel, der Pool wurde auch gerade restauriert während unseres Aufenthaltes, durch das Angebot den Pool beim Nachbarhotel zu nützen, war dies jedoch kein Problem. Positiv sind die volleingerichtete Küche mit Geschirrwaschmaschine, […] Waschmaschine und Trockner. Das Zimmer war sauber, die Möbel jedoch nicht mehr sehr modern. Die Nähe zum Flughafen sowie zu vielen Restaurants und Shops sind positiv. Alles in allem hat es uns für den Preis gefallen. Lisateave

Good and comfort hotel nead all what is in Kona. The room was nice and we really enjoyed even though we didn't have much time to spend there since there are so much to see in the island. It's nice that car parking is free.

ホテルではなく現地な感じで、またレンタカーでの移動の場合、このコンドは本当にオススメです。 オーシャンフロントに7泊しました。海が見える景色が大事な場合はオーシャンフロントをオススメします。 目の前の海岸にはウミガメがよくいて、夕日も綺麗で、ロケーションも最高でした。ビーチやスノーケリングスポットに行くにも都合のよい便利なロケーションでした。

A large apartment with full kitchen including all equipment free internet washer/dryer etc. Pool and yaccuzzi and poolarea with several BBQ´s. Free parking and walking distance to everything. A very comfortable bed. This was the best place we ever stayed at, would recommend it particulary for extended periods.

Wir haben 5 Nächte im Oktober 2010 dort verbracht und waren angenehm überrascht von der Größe der Suite, die beinahe schon eine kleine (und übrigens mit Geschirrspüler, Geschirr, Waschmaschine etc. vollständig eingerichtete) Wohnung ist. Auch der Balkon ist relativ groß und man kann gut zu dritt oder noch mehr Leuten dort sitzen. Nicht zu überbieten […] war die Sicht auf das Meer vom Balkon aus. Auch die Lage des Hotels hat uns gut gefallen, dicht am Meer und relativ ruhig und trotzdem nahe am Zentrum, wo es sehr nette Restaurants/Bars und Geschäfte gibt, die zu Fuß gut zu erreichen sind. 初めてのハワイでした。 オーシャンフロントの部屋を3名で、3泊利用しました。 3名利用なので一人はソファーでしたが、それを差し引いても全く文句なしの快適なホテルでした。 キッチンには必要なものがすべてそろっており、長期滞在には最適と思います。部屋からの景色も最高で、もっと長く滞在したかったです。 ただ、市街地などからは少し離れています。今回はコナマラソンと、1日はツアー利用だったため不便は感じませんでしたが、次くることがあればレンタカーを利用しようと思います。 ホテルすぐ前の海はサーフスポットのようで、サーフィンやボディーボードを楽しむ人がたくさんいました。サーファーにもお勧めのホテルではないかと思います。

友達と彼女と泊るには最適です、部屋は綺麗だし、洗濯も自炊もできるので運転できる方なら最高のロケーションです。 海外旅行に慣れてる方にお勧めです。
