The hotel is about a ten minute walk from the Zoo train/bus station. This station provides a good starting point for getting around Berlin. The hotel was in a quiet location but there are plenty of bars/restaurants within a couple minutes walk. The hotel was clean and the staff courteous and helpful. Could not find fault in any area other than breakfast price.(Hence ate at lovely bakehouse on next corner.) Great location easily accessed from Tegel airport and easy walk to great shopping and zoo. Highly recommend walking tours of Berlin.

The hotel is OK. The ladies up front are cute and sweet. However, the rooms are below the quality of Motel 6. The hot water radiator is behind the curtain - how can it effectively radiate heat? The shower is small with a thin plastic curtains. There were no amenities exceot two tiny bags of Haribo gummy bears. I had to use chairs to raise the curtains […] off the radiator (it was just below freezing at night). The TV channels were all fuzzy. Of course for CNN and BBC this is an improvement. The room lacks propoer lighting and has no clock. The reasonable price per night jumped 5x for stays the rest of the week due to the IBT Berlin convention. Great. I just stayed up all night. It would be absurd to pay a month's rent for one hotel night at the Gates. Lisateave

English speaking staff were generally helpful and courteous. Nice large room on the 4th floor in the back building with a balcony and a separate bathroom, all for one person (perhaps they ran out of small single rooms). The free wireless Internet was great and reasonably fast. The bathroom a large frosted window that could be opened, radiator towel […] dryers, handheld shower massage with adjustable nozzle, and shower tiles (rather than plastic shower curtains) was much better compared to the small single room I had just the week before. Walked from the hotel to Ernst Reuter Platz (U-Bahn) in 2-4 minutes, or to the Zoologischer Station (S- and U-Bahn) in 5-8 minutes. Also, KuDamm is and the Europa Center (and the Kaiser Wilhem Memorial Church) just the other side of the Zoologischer Station (and of course the actual Zoo is in the area also). I would suggest the management improve the selection and quality of the television. The only English channels were news (of the typical biased variety) and the TV was a vintage model with plenty of excess raster noise with a fuzzy pre-2000 screen resolution. Lisateave

Good value for the money. Very pleasant and English speaking reception staff. A few selected areas for improvement: 1) add a clock; 2) improve the room lighting; and 3) add a few amenities (shampoo) in addition to a sliver of soap.

Hotel staff was horrible. There was a mistake on our reservation from the website and they blamed us when it was a miscommunication between them and the website. Room was tolerable but our experience with the staff made it difficult to enjoy our time there. Never have I been treated like that by a hotel.

Fantastic! Comfort rooms are much nicer than the standard single. Super location and gorgeous neighborhood. Also 1 block from X09 Xpress Tegel bus. Large cheap grocery store. 2 blocks from Sauvinyplatz. Highly recommend this. THey have a sister location near Bulowstrasse--- but not as nice.

Convenient location to public transportation and all the major tourist sites--the Zoo, Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Potzdammer Platz, Unter den Linden. Friendly helpful English-speaking personnel, easy check-in, free wi-fi, luggage storage. Comfortable rooms, great bathrooms. I would definitely recommend it again.

I liked the hotel. They were friendly and nice. I looked online and saw under "All Inclusive" that breakfast was served and in the same sentence it said "services that won't cost you a cent." I understood the breakfast to be "all inclusive" but was hit with a charge on my way out...the desk staff could not help and writing the office manager later proved […] unsuccessful. Really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would definitely recommend. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and were able to leave our bags after check-out. The hotel is conveniently situated about 5 minute walk from the X9 (20 mins from Tegel Airport) bus stop at Ernst Router Platz. Walk towards the Renaissance theatre, which is on the corner […] of Knesebeckstrasse. Our room faced the inner courtyard, and was extremely quiet which with the comfortable bed made for an excellent nights sleep. The room was large, with a good sized bathroom and a shower as big as some hotel bathrooms! Would have liked some Tea/Coffee making facilities in the room, but as we identified this beforehand and brought a small travel kettle. Lisateave

We arrived early in the morning and asked for an early check in. They had a room ready for us an hour later. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The location of the hotel is perfect. There is a lot of nice restaurants around and the shopping mile is close by. The staff spoke English well and were very helpful. I would definitely stay here again

Booked this hotel on a very good deal, location is superb where the underground is just 5 minutes away. A cafe nearby the hotel is marvelous too. The staff were very helpful, the room was clean and spacious. The hotel offered free wifi which was surprisingly very fast. Easy to find. 3 minutes walk from Ernst Reuter Platz underground and bus stops for X9 express bus to Tegel airport. Great location for bars and restaurants. Room was spacious with a big walk in shower and heating was controlled from the room . Planning to go back to Berlin in the summer and I will stay here again.

We were dead tired after the overnight flight form the US and had requested early check in if possible. We arrived at 10 AM and were not able to check in until 2PM. The staff seemed totally indifferent to our request even though we saw others checking in before us. The hotel is fine, but the staff could use some training on accommodating guests.

The hotel is very old with squeeky wooden floors. One hears everything and can't sleep at all. We changed rooms three times to get better Wifi, but I can't say it worked. Definitely not for someone who Has to be "in touch with rest of the world/work". Front desk people were nice and tried to help as much as they could. Location isn't that bad, but next […] time I would pick a hotel closer to everything. One big plus is a buss stop X9 two blocks away from which one can take buss to the TXL airport. We were for 2 nights. Excellent location. No a/c. The pillows were so soft you may need 3 of them which they could not provide. It was a bit pricey hotel where breakfast was not included. Airport bus from the hotel was a blessing.

Very good stay at this hotel. It's location is good, set in a very nice leafy suburb of Berlin. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants within walking distance. The hotel staff are very helpful and helped us with taxis and opening times of sights etc. Breakfast is fine and has a good choice. The u bahn is about 5 mins walk away and is on the direct […] line for Checkpoint Charlie and the Olympic Stadium ( which is well worth a visit). Only negative is that the elevator that accessed rooms in the rear was out of service throughout our stay. The plate on the front of the hotel had three stars, which corresponds in our view to its comforts, but we found it nevertheless well worth our stay.

The hotel is centrally located in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin; the area has lots of nice restaurants and cafes, it's very close to both the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, and I would definitely stay in the same area if I return to Berlin. I would have to point out, though, that the internet service is very spotty in the hotel and there were times I could […] not get on it at all. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Also, we were unable to make an international call from our room; we followed instructions and apparently, the people at the front desk couldn't do it either. One more thing - I think the breakfast left a lot to be desired, especially considering the price - 9,50 euro. We ate there only once during our 3 day stay. Overall, I think it's a nice hotel in a wonderful location; the staff was certainly helpful and accommodating, and the price was right. As a matter of fact, we arrived hours before check-in time, not expecting to get into our room, but since there was actually a room available at 9:00 a.m., they gave us this larger room at no extra cost and let us check in. I thought that was very accommodating for them to do so. And an added bonus was that this room faced the courtyard in the back, so it was very quiet. I would definitely stay at this hotel again. This is no longer a 4 star hotel as advertised - the receptionist said it had been downgraded to 3 star a year or so ago. On arrival, we were told that because of overbooking the hotel could only offer us 2 single rooms, instead of the 2- bed room booked. Their reasoning was that if we chose two beds then we wouldn't mind two rooms! The hotel is in a lovely Alt Bau in peaceful Charlottenberg. We were in through the Hof and so it was very quiet. Room furniture was a bit worn but bathroom modern and brillant. The range at breakfast was good for the price but not up to some German 4* buffet spreads. It is pushed by Expedia as Hotel Novum and there is a small sign but the big sign […] is Hotel Gates. The best thing about the Gates Novum was the location to the U Bahn and S Bahn along with being in a very residential neighborhood. I arrived 8:30 AM was not able to get my room until later in afternoon. I was given room 225 that I could not find after 20 mins, finally front desk person helped and could not find my room very easily either. Turns out, […] hotel has section in back that is actually floor 2.5 with 4 rooms on each floor this was my home for 8 days. this section of hotel is 1/2 flight off from all other sections of hotel and accessible by staircase only. Room extremely small with a king bed in it. One pillow, one towel and a TV that only worked when I was 2 feet from it. No AC and a shower I did not figure out until my second night. Turns out, I had to pull out one knob, turn water on. I am not large man but shower barely fit me. Front desk staff was always present, somewhat attentive but very obvious the hotel is a tourist turn and burn meaning guests come and go fast so staff are indifferent. Hotel boasted free Internet that you have to know to get passcode personally from front desk and access that is spotty, dropped me constantly (at hotel for business), and usually I could not even get on because it seemed every guest used the same access point. If you want a place to drop your bag, sleep, and take shower this place is perfect although I think a hostel for half the price does the same thing. Lisateave

Bad service, our triple room which was supposed to be ready for 3 people, had only bed sheets / pillows enough for two. when I went downstairs and asked for it. The guy at the reception said you should come back tomorrow when maids are back. after insisting that I need something to sleep with, he said Okay I will bring it for you in 30 minutes. Well. […] that never happend, called reception no answer... so I went downstair and told him, "are you ignoring me?" after few minutes he accepted to walk to the room where they were keeping bed sheets / pillows / blanket and handed me all those and I took them by myself to the room. The U-Bahn station is just a couple minutes from the hotel, then it's one station from the shopping district of Kurfürstendamm and 20 minutes to the hauptbahnhof. Our room was relatively large for Europe. The windows open to an enclosed courtyard, which had a burst of noise in the mornings. The nearby cafe and bookstore were great.

For the most part, we loved the Hotel Gates Novum. But there were two major disappointments. We were told (by Hotels.com) that the room was air conditioned. It was not, and we suffered through a week-long heat wave. The hotel staff offered us a floor-standing fan which saved our lives. The other disappointment was the flaky WiFi system. We had a room which had two sofa beds as well as the large double. There were three of us on this occasion. The room was spacious and there was plenty of hanging space for clothes although more coat hangers would have made this more useable. The room was quite warm as there isn't air conditioning so the windows which were large needed to be open and […] as we were on the front of the hotel this let in traffic noise, however this didn't affect us at night but early morning it is quite busy so if you want a lie in you need to get up and shut the external and internal windows which blocks it out, again we didn't find this an issue, the room more than made up for this minor inconvenience. There is free internet access which is a bonus but if like me you don't have your own device with you, the laptop which is provided in reception is not situated well as it is fixed at high level to a 'Buddy Bear' I found this virtually unusable, If you don't have great vision the username and password are hard to read and likewise the screen also after only a minute or two the crick in my neck just told me not to bother. The hotel is convenient for transport links and has some great cafe's and restaurants nearby. We had a very good experience at this hotel. Lisateave

I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Gates because its location is in the middle of the area where I lived 25 years ago. This made it easy to reminisce. Arriving from airport Tegel, the X09 bus connects quite conveniently, and also otherwise the hotel is in easy walking distances to U-Bahn station Ernst Reuter Platz or S-Bahn station Savignyplatz, Berlin Zoo, […] Gedächtniskirche, Kurfürstendamm, TU Berlin, UdK, the Tiergarten, etc. Interesting were the proportions of the room which was higher than it was wide or long, given that the hotel occupies one of the Gründerzeit buildings that have amazing ceiling heights. Otherwise, the room was perhaps a bit cramped; however, it did offer a desk and it was oriented towards the quiet courtyard which allowed me to sleep with open window given that I enjoyed one of the warmest summer days this year in Berlin.
