Royal Kona Resort - Kailua-Kona

We upgraded to an ocean front room omg it was so beautiful. The ocean was almost under our balcony. just amazing. The staff could not have been more helpful. The location was great would absolutely recommend this hotel

Walking distance to a lot of restaurants. Nothing great though. And having to pay for parking and Internet was super lame. Would probably not stay here again, just splurge and stay at the Marriott or Hilton up the coast.

This is the second time we have stayed here, the last was 4 years ago. You couldn't ask for a better location in Kona. Our room was an ocean front, large and a huge lanai. Had AC but slept with the 2 sliding doors open to hear the waves crashing and to get the cool night air. the couch in the room however was so filthy, that we asked them to exchange […] it. They said the didn,t have another, so I had them cover the couch and chair with sheets, otherwise we would not have used them. I have seen cleaner couches out for the garbage. When the guy from housekeeping came to cover it he saw it and said "Oh my goodness". The hotel is getting run down and needs to be renovated. Sliding door locks don't work so they have attached another lock to the door and the frame. The bathroom was okay but had to be slammed if you wanted it to stay closed. Carpets are worn and it is definately a 3 star hotel. After saying this, we would stay there again. Depends on the room location, but we had a great view and the room we could put up with. Staff extremely friendly and accomodating. restaurant only open for dinner 3 nights a week, but food is good, and also great location with tables right on the ocean. Lisateave

Enjoyed my stay, room was clean, modern, staff provided good service. Room had flat screen TV with good selection of channels. Hotel restaurant provided good selection of local food. There is also a Luau available on property. Would stay again.

Our corner room was spacious with a generous deck, which we loved. The room smelled a little musty when we entered but after opening both sets of sliders, the odor seemed to dissipate. We enjoyed a drink and food at the hotel bar where the service was friendly and the view was lovely. The bar dj provided music that was sound-level appropriate for people […] trying to have a conversation. The water in both pool levels was cold so no relaxing swim. The linens were adequate but not luxurious. A fine spot for our one night stay prior to departing the Big Island. Lisateave

Very happy over all with our stay at the Royal Kona Resort,beautiful views and and accommodation was roomy,cosy with a magic view of the ocean and sun set

The location was perfect for walking around historic Kona. We did have to switch rooms since the first room didn't have hot water for showers. Staff was very kind and helpful! I would stay here again.

I thought this was a beautiful hotel, from the lobby, to the resturant, to the rooms. It was very open and comfortable, and everything you needed was right there! The staff was very friendly, and I loved the open air bar/resturant area. Our room had a huge corner balcony. The room was large & comfortable. If I had to be picky, I would say the bathroom […] needed some attention... it looked updated but not done well. A lot of the fixtures were rusty. Otherwise, a beautiful hotel through and through!!! This hotel is located in a scenic spot easy walk to shops and restsurants. The building is dated but service was good, room was clean and had all we needed.

The hotel is conveniently located near all the Kona night life, as well as right on the ocean front. Although the service was adequate, since there were four of us, not enough towels were provided. Also, it was surprising coffee was only available for the first morning, and no more. We were expected to purchase additional packets in their sundries shop, […] kind of a chinzy deal. In addition, the taxes and "service fees" added to the room rate, doubled the price per day, an unpleasant surprise. Our "ocean view" was of three palm trees!!!! We were however able to change rooms the last two days to the Bay tower with an ocean view. We have had better breakfast buffets for free at the Best Western and Days Inn Hotels. Definately overpriced for what you get.

Great stay. Got free view of the Luau show from our balcony and the staff were very helpful with a late check out time and the use of a room to clean up before we left for our red eye flight home.

Me and my family had a great time at The Royal Kona Resort. i have'nt stayed there for a very long time. I would really recommend friends and family to stay there. The location was beautiful, especially because we got ocean view,at a slightly higher cost, ofcourse. We could'nt get reservations by calling the hotel, so i tried other options and Hotels.com […] is where its at. We will definetly use Hotels.com again. thank you very much Lisateave

I had a great room with a view of the mountains on the right side and the view of the ocean when I was sitting in bed on the left window's. The room was a top room 7th floor on the corner. What a surprise !!! The bar was great, Cory and Garret were great bartender's. Don the Beachcomber for breakfast was good. The view and staff help was Top Notch. For […] scuba diving - Big Island Divers was was FANTASTIC. Great staff, we saw 21 Giant Manta Rays. I am an underwater photographer, and the photos were Nat Geo. that night. For great Hawaiian Music, walk nest door to Huggos. Music from 5:30 to 9pm. You can dance on the sand, Yahoo. I love The Royal Kona Resort. Lisateave

The hotel's grounds were just absolutely gorgeous! Located directly next to the ocean, sitting poolside or at the bar and gazing out as the sun was setting and the tranquility of it all was amazing. And I felt at ease with the price because we weren't spending nearly as much as you would think they could charge for this wonderful resort. It helped me […] sleep easy in their plush and comfortable beds. The staff is simply awesome. They were cheerful and accomodating every step of the way. A true demonstration of the Aloha spirit. We loved our stay here. The rooms are bit dated but very clean. The landscaping, lobby, views etc. are great! The bar has the best Mai tais at a reasonable price. You can walk to shops and restaurants. We would definitely stay again. Great value for the price

Pros: Great location. Walking distance to restaurants/shopping. Close to airport. On the beach- nice view. Cons: Needs a makeover! No hot tub :( Pool was okay but not very resort-like and you could not bring your own beverages. Beds were not very comfortable and comforter was old and had been washed many, many times. The hotel location is perfect, 1 minute walk to town. Quiet at night, and no road noise during the day. A very peaceful place to stay at. Had a beautiful luau setting, and the pool area is clean and convenient to the rooms, restaurant, and bar. Amazing sunsets right from the restaurant, or sitting area. Ann at the front desk is a grrrrreat person. kind […] and friendly. She has helped my family out for 15 years. I would highly reccomend this hotel for a weeks stay. The bathrooms need just a bit of updating, but who spends all day in the bathroom in Hawaii? Lisateave

The hotel three star rating would indicate a level of cleanliness and updated accommodations that did not match our expectations. Although the outside of the hotel was well groomed and the beach view was excellent, the inside of the hotel simply sucked. The elevator was old with a rug to match and with stains and scuffs along the walls. The hallway […] carpet was old and dirty. The room carpet was old and dirty with visible stains. The room was also dusty and smelled of mildew and the dust that caked the detailings of the room; the fixtures and electronics are probably 15-20+ years old; the craftsmanship is poor in regards to the wall painting, carpeting, and wood work; the wall mirror, chairs and baseboards were chipped and the walls and door at foot level were scuffed and stained as well. The sliding glass door was old, dirty (as in, caked in dust), and difficult to operate. The bathroom was simply disgusting; the bathtub was last cleaned during the rein of King Kamehameha I with black rim around the fixtures, brown stains on the floor of the tub, dust-filled air conditioning vents, rusted walls and metal fittings and black mold on caulk. Notice the repetition of "old" and the stress on the dirtiness. To be fair, the hotel has three towers. We didn't stay in the main one and I didn't care to go in. The restaurant, to which we had a view from our room, looked old as well, but had a great view of the ocean. Stay at your own peril! Lisateave

Needs a major renovation. The carpets are old and stained. The rooms were old. The redeeming factor was the amazing ocean view.

Great location. Great view of ocean from pool. Rooms nice enough. We needed a fan to help keep our room cool enough but i like it very cool. Restaurant food and bar service good but priced as you would expect a seaside Hawaii resort would be. Very convenient to local kona restaurants and shops.

The hotel is in a great location, but the pool is really lack luster, there is no room service and the overall appearance of the hotel is quite dated.

Loved the lobby and sitting watching the ocean, the bar, the drinks and food, and just vegging downstairs but the room was in need of cleaning and updating (ceramic tiles shouldn't have "dust bunnies" and hair in corners and on edges of tiles), and the "ocean view" was more a view of service area and back lane and parking. Complaining didn't help although […] most staff were very nice. Early bird rates reasonable but expected cleanliness. Lisateave

Great location for sunset viewing.

We have never visited the big island and booked this purely from Hotel.com reviews. We thought it was great and a very good value. We loved the location. Just a few blocks down the street from major tourist strip. One the water with a very good view. We would stay there again.

While prices at the bar and restaurant are too high, In my opinion, this is a great place to stay for a few days. Really close to downtown and all its restaurants and shopping stores.

Nice hotel but showing its age. Badly needs some upgrading. Coud be the first rate hotel it once was. Overall it was a good value.

The location is really great. Close to a lot of dining and sightseeing options in Kona. Their in-house bar (Don the Beachcomber) is a great place to watch sunsets. The rooms are clean and comfortable but not at all luxurious so if you are okay with that stay here.

The Royal Kona Resort is located on an old lava flow situated right on the ocean front. There is no beach to speak of, however the waves crashing on the rocky shore makes up for it. I loved just listening to the waves at night through the balcony door. I just wouldn't recommend it if you wanted to go downstairs and lay on the beach. To get to sandy […] beach, you need to drive a little bit. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and cleaned efficiently. In the lobby is a bar and restaurant called "Don the Beachcomber" which is apparently famous for their Mai Tai's. We had a lot of fun their. There are a number of bars, restaurants, and shops within walking distance. In fact, one night I wanted water, and instead of paying the $3 at the vending machine for an 8 oz bottle, I walked 3 minutes over to the ABC store and bought a much larger one for 99 cents. we arrived and were impressed by the spacious open-air lobby and restaurant area - we had been there for dinner before so we knew that you dont have to pay the $10 per day parking fee - as you can find free spots along their access road. the room was spacious and confortable with a gorgeous view of the tidal pool - you definitely want to be on the 2nd […] floor or higher to avoid trees blocking your views. The resort is older and it showed on the ragged carpet on the balcony - but besides that, everything was comfortable and accessable. They provide a coffee pot but only coffee for the first day - the staff were helpful and friendly - the view and comfortable chairs around the bar area were wonderful - walking distance to all the downtown restaurants and shops. cheapest rate was with hotels.com where we got every third night free. In this day and age it is unusual to be charged for the use of the internet in your hotel room. Royal Kona needs to change its policy. Also, charged $10 per day to park outside seems excessive, especially on Big Island where having a car is essential.

The staff was very nice. We arrived three days prior to our daughters so we ask at the desk, if they could put them on the same floor and close to our room. We had originally booked them a mountain view room. The staff put them in a partial ocean view on the same floor as us and just one door away. We were very appreciative, they didn't have to do it. […] The Fri. night buffet coupon was a good deal. The food was great at a good price. The snorkeling lagoon was very nice and relaxing - hundreds of fish to see and safe for all. Lisateave

Liked the view from our ocean view room. Food was really good and drinks were tasty. Would stay again and recommend.

Coffee pkg is provided for one night, then every night after that they charge $1.45 per bag. I find this incovenient (I left a note for maid to give me 5, I got none) & ridiculous since if there was a new occupant the hotel would put coffee. This is not good advertising for the hotel nor Kona in general since it is known for coffee!

With a great location, close to town and on the water, this hotel should be a no-brainer. I was dissappointed with the service and the condition of our room. We were unable to check in early, though I reserved a king bed room, we ended up with two full beds right next to the elevator...thin walls. The front desk staff was no help trying to set up a […] shuttle to the airport. I expected a lot more from this hotel. The pool and bar area was amazing. Fantastic resort with everything you need and very close to heaps of great places to eat, relax and watch the world go by love the whale and dolphin watching at breakfast in the bistro.

The hotel was in one of the best locations ever. It was in easy walking distance of all of the shops and restaurants in town so we didn't have to use our car except for day trips. A big plus. I booked an oceanview room and had a view of the ocean and the dilapidated, in much need of repair roof of Don the Beachcomer, very disappointing and distracting […] from the view. Big parts of the roof missing and exposed wiring and mechanical things. The overall staff was very good except in the large lounge area. We were met with either indifference or downright rudeness so we took our business elsewhere for our 5 days and nights in Kailua. Our one and only drink in the hotel was a day when a rain squall came in and everyone dashed for the covered area. We had our check and wanted to pay. When we asked the bartender if he could take care of the bill for us, he said "I'm a bartender, not a server". Hmmmm. Our server wasn't much better. Not a smile or kind word among them and very slow service. We felt like we were unwanted guests in their home so we left. I gave it one more try with 3 chatting bartenders/servers and got ignored even though there was no one else there. I should have waited until they finished their conversation but as the minutes ticked by, I left. The lagoon area was fabulous and we had a very nice afternoon there. The pool was surprisingly small for a hotel of this size and there is no food or beverage service. The biggest red flag at this hotel is security. Your next door neighbors on either side can actually step over a small wall and onto your lanai, into your room! There is zero privacy from your next door neighbors so you have to leave your window coverings completely closed and dark with your door locked (that's another story) while showering, dressing or lying in bed. They can look over into your room from the rooms on both sides with a full view of everything in your room. The front desk staff needs to be aware that you do not announce a person's room nu Lisateave
