I booked this hotel several weeks in advance and paid a little more than I intended to because the booking offered a poolside room. When I arrived to check-in, I was told that all the poolside rooms were taken. i showed the manager my confirmation and was told rooms booked through "3rd party vendors" weren't guaranteed. I was offered a 'very nice' (it […] wasn't) room on the 7th floor with a balcony overlooking the pool. My "nice" room had an awful smell. The carpets were wet and the fixtures were old and worn. I thought I was going to a historical hotel but really just got a rundown building. However, the employees I encountered were nice. A very notable person was Alberto in the Tiki Bar. he was awesome!! If I could've found a different hotel, any hotel, I would have changed this reservation. It was too expensive for its condition and I was not satisfied at all with anything except the location. When we checked in we walked into our room which was nothing like online. It smelled, there were gross stains on the carpet and even our pillows were yellow […] and dirty. We paid for a pool view to which we had a window that was facing the pools direction but you could not see the pool since it was on the opposite end of the building and blocked by some kind of canopy area. Also, room service was never available and the maids that 'cleaned' our room left areas still dirty. I checked under our beds and low and behold there was trash under there too (trash which wasn't even from our stay)! They had loud music playing at the pool area almost every night (we were there Wednesday through Sunday) which was very inconvenient since I have a young son and there was nothing that set this hotel above any others that I've stayed at. I was very disappointed because online it looked nice and it would've been a fair price if it was like the online photos...but since it was not, it was too pricey and very disappointing! I will never stay there again or recommend anyone to stay there! Lisateave

Staff amazingly friendly and willing to help in anyway. They all went above and beyond. Overall great service. Not too happy of the location, on riverwalk but not too close to the restaurants. In walking distance but not right outside doorstep as I thought it would be. Overall stay great though

a 15 minute brisk walk to the start of where the action of the river elk is. nothing around hotel to go to if you don't want to walk that far (was advised not to walk too far late at nite). we did and all was fine. a helpful staff however taxi information was inconsistent, would give info but lack direction when requested. Room comfortable beds, bad […] smell-odor like lysol when entered room. opened window & shut off air conditioning. picture missing from wall, old bathroom -running faucets if u don't shut them off the right way. telephone was still the one from when it was the holiday inn.. bar area nice and good service. computers available in lobby but if using your iPad/laptop they have wifi but inconsistently works Lisateave

We thought that the hotel was going to be a tropical oasis away from home, but it turned out to be a cheap, poorly renovated hotel, with an average staff. The hotel wasn't gross, it was just old and not very well kept. Not all of the staff at El Tropicano was unhelpful; in fact there were two employees that were very helpful, but that wasn't enough […] to make us want to stay. Although it is located on the riverwalk, it isn't anywhere close to the restaurants, bars, mall or other shops that are the main attraction of the riverwalk. We ended up cancelling our reservation two nights early and going to stay at the La Quinta downtown. A much more pleasant experience and location for only a few dollars more. Lisateave

Lond music was playing until midnight. We called to the front desk 3 times and nobody did anything about it. Carpet was dirty also. We will never stay here again.

I can't give this hotel and their staff enough stars. You can tell in some places that this is an older hotel but it is clean and in reminded me of old world Acapulco. It was classy and glamorous. When you check in they give you coupons for their breakfast and it consists of eggs/hashbrowns/bacona and sausage/toast/tortillas/cereal/yogurt/fruit/ juice […] and coffee. There is a coffee /snack bar where you can get a sandwhich or salad or coffee and cheesecake. There are two tiki bars. The beds were clean and oh so comfortable.I went to san antonio to visit y son and his gf and they let them stay with me at the hotel the entire week without an extra charge. The parking is 18 per day (which you can't go downtown without paying to park) but they cut that rate and they didn't charge my son at all. The staff was always nice and courteous and willing to go out of their way to help. I had one small issue and that is its location. It is 6 or 8 blocks into downtown so the daily walk isn't for the faint of heart but there are many different modes of transportation. Taxis, water taxis etc but they are all like 10 each. I will say that the walk was tiring but the wind blew and it was just a beautiful walk. I don't regret it one bit and will stay here the next time I visit my son. Had no problems checking in or out. Could have done without the $18 daily parking rate, especially since the lot was difficult to get around in. Valet was nice to have when I couldn't find my own spot. Overall the hotel was clean, however when I was there during a flash flood, the ground floor was soaked; towels lined the inside by the windows as well […] as buckets placed around the area. I understand they did what they had to do. My comforter was dirty, and the air conditioner was rattly at first, then subsided eventually. Didn't mind the 10 minute walk to the more popular area of the Riverwalk. Construction nearby and some vacant buildings surrounded the area, but not much could be done about that either. I'm mostly just sore about the parking rates. Ten dollars a day would be MUCH more reasonable, at least. Lisateave

The hotel is very old, the area even thou is on the river walk is away from all the shops and entertainment, we had to walk for about 10 minutes to get to an area where we could get food... The crew who cleans the room didn't vacuumed our room for the 3 days we stayed in, the personal at the front desk was courteous...

Overall I had a good stay at the hotel. The room/bathroom is really really small but I was there for a convention and didn't spend much time in my room. It did however have a nice flat screen tv with an hdmi port if you want to bring some sort of dvd player gaming device. The breakfast buffet was really yummy too and the hotel staff was very friendly. […] Fitness Center was also nice. My room was on the second floor where the pool was located so i didn't have a private balcony. However, did have a table with chairs to sit at where you could walk out into a court yard like patio and make your way to the pool. The rest of the floors have balconies though. There is a full bar and an espresso bar that serves lunches and dinners in the hotel but no restaurant. The hotel is located at the other end of the River Walk though but you can take a River Taxie to the main strip or Walk the streets to River Center if you know how to get there. Lisateave

Generally, I was pleased, but two things were really bad...the Internet service and the cable. I had read a warning about the Internet, but assumed it would have been resolved by time I arrived...it was NOT! They had just put in new TVs but there was an apparent mis-connection with the actual cable service...most stations were missing. The ambience […] was decent, right on the Riverwalk and easy access to Rivercenter Mall. Breakfast was included and very good. My guess is that the hotel is undergoing an upgrade but hasn't quite arrived. In the future, I would pay more to be closer to Rivercenter and other sites. This was a little removed. Lisateave

My husband along with friends had a nice stay. Only set back was the female bartender would charge us then forget to bring us our drinks. When we would remind her she would act like we never ordered or paid. So we left and enjoyed other area bars. Hotel was nice and breakfast was awesome . Kids loved the pool!

Our stay could have been a disaster but the staff was very accommodating. Our check-in was delayed but the front desk staff was very helpful and gave us drink coupons for the tiki bar, comped our parking and gave us breakfest coupons. We had a nice time, room very nice and clean, hotel staff super friendly and helpful. Very quiet and peaceful surrounding, parking on street is a hassle because of early morning meters. River walk shops and restaurants at least a 20 min river taxi ride.

The rooms are over priced for their size. My husband had to back against the wall for me to pass at the foot of bed. The rooms are very small. The view obscured by trees. Nice lobby and nice staff. Probably won't stay there again

We loved the hotel, which located at the quieter end of the Riverwalk. We enjoyed parking at the hotel (first time San Antonio visitors are offered half off parking, which takes it to $9/day), and then took the local trolley system around where we needed to go on $4/day ride passes. The hotel was clean and we enjoyed getting the free breakfast buffet, […] however, we heard everything from upstairs and our neighbors. Walls are SUPER THIN and that is our only complaint. For the price we paid, and as first time guests to San Antonio, we felt we got a great deal! Buffet Breakfast could use some changes with what is offered. Lisateave

Late April for 5 nights, Arrived Sunday afternoon with wife for Vacation/Conference at hotel. Rate included Breakfast $10 per/day, parking extra $18/night. An attendee paid $9 by calling hotel directly. Check-in OK but no hot water. Called front desk said it was being worked on sorry for inconvenience. No hot water Monday morning. Still working on it. […] I asked why we were not told during check-in. No explanation. Of course if they had told customers during check-in some would have gone elsewhere. I said if I had been them I would have offered a couple of drink coupons for inconvenience. They gave me two coupons. Hot water finally arrived Tuesday evening (48 hours after check-in). Lisateave

I attended the IRA convention April 18, 2013 through April 22, 2013 and stayed at the El Tropicano Hotel. I attended the event alone and truly enjoyed my stay. I stayed in a King size room which was a clean and beautiful room. It was very spacious and I had a balcony which I never had the chance to enjoy because I stayed busy the entire time. Breakfast […] was great! You will have a hot breakfast that is buffet style and you serve yourself. The menu consist of bacon, (eggs, two types of eggs, but fried), sausage, pancakes, bagels, oatmeal, fruits, cranberry juice, orange juice, water, coffee and tea. The waitress assisted you with what you needed. Everything was right there for you to enjoy! The staff was very friendly and helpful. If I should visit San Antonio again, I will definitely stay at El Tropicano. It is accessible to where you may want to go. While I was there- I used the Trolly for transportation- it only costed $1.20 and later in the day- I caught a Taxi to Lulu's which only cost $5.00 from the hotel. It has the best food that you would enjoy. I tried their country fried steak which was amazing with gravy and their cinnamon rolls are homemade and would make you want to come back for more. I also rode the boat as where we were given a tour of the Riverwalk and history about buildings and famous people who filmed movies, etc. I shared this information with my family and friends and they have El Tropicano on their list when they decide to go on a tour. Went for the fiestas, asked for a happy 21st b-day greeting for my niece, didn't happen! Spoke with Carly, a supervisor. She was rude and very unfriendly. No concierge, no valet on arrival. Called for concierge at 0900 the day of check out , took my own stuff down at 1100. Was billed for 4 nights of parking stayed 3 nights! Another 3 rooms were for […] 2 nights also over billed! When I asked for it to be corrected Robert! Was even more rude and unfriendly than the supervisor Carly! The nicest people at the hotel were the cleaning staff and the bar tenders! Rooms extremely small, rest room doors tiny and overweight person would of had an issue just using the toilet. Don't waste your time stay at a better place its worth the extra 20 a night! Lisateave

Overall great stay. Beautiful lobby and pool area. Rooms outdated but clean and comfortable. No hot water 2 days out of 3 but we managed and staff was awsum. Will stay there again. Booking was easy and trouble free. Thanks for a wonderful stay.
