Excelsior Hotel Berlin - Berliin

I had booked and paid for this hotel (5 rooms) back in January 2012 for myself and a small group of friends, who are all professionals about 40 years old, for a stay in April 2012. Given the time booked in advance I reconfirmed our bookings at the start of April directly with the hotel and was told everything was fine. On arrival about 2pm, we were […] initially told no rooms were available and that we were being moved to the Holiday Inn which we viewed as a retrograde step as it was further away from the centre (1-2miles) and wasn't 4 stars. Any compensation suggested was minimal and amounted to free transport. Fortunately, one of my friends works in the travel industry, demanded the manager and suggested he reaccommodate us in at least a 4 star hotel in the same area. When the manager began to see we would not be fobbed off and any relocation would be very expensive for the hotel, 5 rooms mysteriously appeared, and he apologised and bought us all a drink at the bar. Whilst we were at the bar we noted other people checking in so the hotel did not appear completely full. This episode aside the hotel is clean, well placed and pleasant. Staff were generally helpful and we had a pleasant stay. Nevertheless, our initial reception leads me to poorly rate this hotel. Lisateave

We stayed at the Excelsior Berlin for a long weekend in April. The hotel is situated a few minutes walk from the U-Bahn stop 'Zoologischer Garten,' which was convenient for getting around the city. The neighborhood was far enough out of the centre to feel quiet and comfortable, without it being too far to travel back and forward to the city. They appreciated that not all guests spoke fluent German and were willing to converse in English without us having to ask. We booked the superior room which was a comfortable size. It was clean and tidy on arrival and had everything you could need. The design was fashionable and modern, something you would expect from a more expensive boutique hotel. We liked how the hotel had a bar and restaurant, which are both fairly priced if you don't fancy traveling back into the city. We would book this hotel again on a return trip to Berlin, as we would definitely recommend traveling to the city and staying at this hotel. Lisateave

Got a great deal at this hotel. The area around it has lots of bars, shopping, restaurants, and the subway that's 5 min walk away runs regularly to the airport and all major tourist sights. Excelsior Hotel in Berlin. Let me tell you some good things about this hotel. 1) Good location - near the Zoological train/underground station, very convenient wherever you go. Shops are within walking distance. A lot of restaurants you can also walk to. 2) Decor - the lobby and the bar all in good atmosphere. 3) Free Internet - it saves you time […] to find internet cafe or bring your own laptop. 4) TV channels - enough to choose from, and they even provide adult channels (gay or straight) to choose from. Good, though I have not chosen any! 5) Value for money - though it is 4 star hotel, it is reasonably priced, really value for money. However, there are some things need to be improved: 1) Bedsheet - was it due to the cleaning detergents of the bedsheet or bed bugs or the soap in the bathroom I do not know, but my skin was irritated after staying there for 4 nights. 2) Ventilation - please do something about it, the ventilation was a bit noisy. It is only I was exhausted after travelling in the morning, otherwise I don't think I can fall asleep. 3) Breakfast - I didn't have breakfast there, since I was told it is 18 euro, I think it is too much, so I went to a cafe next door (at the corner if you leave your hotel and turn left) for 9 euros, perfect! Anyway, I won't complain since it is really what I paid for. If you are looking for a value-for-money hotel, I recommend Excelsior Hotel in Berlin. Lisateave

Quite value for money and the location was easy to get to from the airport and other major stations in Berlin. The only flaws were the service was a bit cold, and the windows were unwashed and it was in such poor condition you could hardly see out.

General impression is fine, the design in the lobby, bar and brasserie was very nice indeed, including food assortment, cleanliness and service. The rooms have not fully met our expectations. For example, the rooms were small and narrow, and the floor was not vacuumcleaned. But the real shock was to find a bug in the bed (looked like ticks). The room was fine very clean + comfortable + location was very close to Zoologister Station , the only fault was the TV did not work + the maids were having a argument in the corridor early in the morning , but alas i would recommend this hotel + would stay here again .

Great location, absolutely for it´s price worth. Nice atmosphere and excellent service. Will come here another time. Only minus the rooms to street still have old windows and the noice from the street too easy to hear.

We booked this hotel through Hotels.com mainly because it seemed centrally located and the price was great value. I would recommend the hotel to anyone wanting a convenient and friendly base to explore Berlin. The service at Reception is friendly and efficient, and they are happy to help with all manner of problems or queries. Our room was nice, with a comfortable bed and a decent bathroom. The only negatives were that the radiator seemed jammed on and the room was very hot on the first night- but we just opened the window, and then raised it the next day with Reception, who sent someone to fix the problem promptly. Also the lighting was a little dim, especially in the bathroom, and perhaps could have been brighter. Finally the bathroom door didn't close properly as it seemed too big for its frame. Just a small detail which could easily be fixed and which I would probably expect to have been addressed by our next visit. Apart from this, we had a lovely stay and could find no real fault- the only problems I have mentioned are very minor and really weren't an issue. Breakfast was lovely if a little on the pricey side- but overall this deal was great value for money and we'll definitely be back. Lisateave

This is EVERYTHING you want in a decent hotel. Staff were courtious and helpfull , room clean and bright will all the necessary ammenities available..loved it and will be back.

We arrived late with our 2 year old! The room was overbooked. Hotel said we needed to confirm our stay prior to arrival, however on hotels.com says we didn't need to! Be careful, check you have a room, they put us in another hotel but spoilt our holiday start, not funny when you have to unpack and pack constantly with toddler in really cold weather! […] Sorry. I recently stayed in this hotel with my girlfriend. Its really modern and clean. The staff are very helpful. I believe it to be great value for money considering the rates aren't too bad and it very much lives up to its 4 star rating. its very close to the station which you can get to everywhere in berlin from. The Excelsior Hotel Berlin is centrally located one block from the main shopping area. I WAS DISGUSTED AT THE HIGH PRICE WE HAD TO PAY FOR MUSIC - 200 EUROS. THE INSTRUCTIONS WE WERE GIVEN WERE THAT WE HAD TO PAY 22 EUROS FOR THE FULL STAY OF 3 NIGHTS. IN ALL MY YEARS OF TRAVELLING I HAVE NEVER HAD TO PAY FOR MUSIC AND IT SPOILED THE END OF A LOVELY HOLIDAY IN A LOVELY CITY. We were upgraded to a suite of the executive floor. The room had an upstairs living room with amazing views over the city. The staff were polite and friendly and helped us plan our days out. It is 300m from the S and U Bahn station at the zoological gardens and about 500m to the Europa centre. Room lighting was poor as it was too dim .

The staff was very helpful with everything. The lobby bar war super with a charming staff. In the center of Berlin and close to the train station (ZOO). Very recomendable.

Very clean, comfortable, slightly larger deluxe room. Breakfast was copious in the pleasant restaurant. Only downside was when we arrived, tired and hungry, we expected to be able to eat in the hotel restaurant, to be told that it was closed for a private party. This was a great hotel centrally located and the staff were very welcoming and could not be more helpful. The front desk staff all spoke very good english. The rooms and bar and restraunt was very professional. A GREAT PLACE TO STAY

Very convenient location, 2 blocks from the S bahn, 2 blocks from a large grocery store and 1 block from a large wine shop. They provided a very convenient business center and the overall cost was very reasonable.

The hotel is in a handy location with an S & U Bahn station nearby and many good restaurants within walking distance. The price we paid for our room was very reasonable. The room was a fairly good standard, however, the walls are too thin - we could hear everything that was happening in the next rooms and the bathroom contantly smelled of drains. Great location beside Zoo station(got the airport express train), shopping streets and the beautiful restaurants of Sauvigny Platz. Felt very at home. Appreciated that guests are offered a discount in the restaurant. It's a nice thought! We didn't get breakfast though as we felt this was a little pricey. We made tea in our room though. There are lots […] of bakeries and a supermarket(under Zoo station) etc nearby so it was easy to grab a bite on our way. Room was lovely and modern with a newly fitted bathroom. Ours was a little small but normal enough for a city hotel and fine given the fact that we were out most of the time. Lobby area and bar is nice and cosy to relax in with a drink or a book. I ordered 2 rooms for a long weekend in Berlin. One superior room and one regular. When I got there the rooms where exactly the same size, only the superior was painted white instead of dark wood. In the overview of the rooms it said that the superior room was supposed to be bigger, and have a Nespresso machine. I went down to the reception to complain […] and the only answer I got was: You have the correct room. I was really disappointed since I had paid more for the comfort I did not get. When ordering food in the Hotel Restaurant, the waiter misunderstood the order twice, and I ended up getting the wrong drinks and waiting 20 minutes for my order when the other got theirs. BUT they made it all good again by treating the whole party with dessert, and all the food was superb! The design and outlook of the hotel was really nice, and the hotel bar had great drinks! Rooms are really small, so are the bathrooms. There was some black hair on the white sheets when we got the room the first day, but other than that the room was clean. conclusion: this is a budget hotel, no luxury. But as a budget hotel they offer rooms that look nice, and a restaurant/bar that offers food way above medium standard! Lisateave

While the hotel may have adopted the respected 'Excelsior' title, its quality is surprisingly poor. The staff is, for the most part, very brusque, and gives very cliched responses when it comes to dining and sight seeing. The rooms are clean, yet tiny and uninviting—the bathroom especially. This hotel encouraged me to spend only one night in Berlin, […] since two in this hotel would have been miserable and cramped. If you plan on simply crashing for the night, this hotel does its job, but if you want a quality, friendly, and spacious hotel, the Excelsior does not fit the bill. Lisateave

good hotel at a good location helpful staff but very small rooms

We got a great hotel special! The decor was great; simplistic and stylish and what we loved the most was the fireplace/ bar communal area with a library. It gave it a wonderful homely feel and we did spend time there relaxing which was unusual for us to do in hotel lobbies. Great access on macs to internet. Room was quite small, but nice, clean. We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The staff were very helpful when we asked for advice. The room was clean and very quiet but a little on the small side. It was good to have a small kettle, plus cups etc in the room. We took our own dried milk/coffee and tea bags after looking at other reviews. Overall the Hotel was very good if you dont mind basic IKEA type furniture in your room. Everywhere was clean and the staff were very polite. We ate in the restaurant on three occasions and the food was excellent a very high standard at a reasonable price. Surrounding areas were good apart from around the Zoo railway bridge 500 yards away. There was […] a number of down and outs but it is a busy area and they do not bother you like in other countries, you would not be worried about your safty. Ideal connections from the Zoo Rail Station to the centre of Berlin and other areas via overground and underground rail network. Numerous city tour buses can be picked up close by too. Location of hotel is fantastic. 2 minute walk to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn and 5 minute walk to Kurfurstendamm. Rooms are extremely small for two people but we didn't spend a lot of time in room. When we arrived at the hotel, we got swift friendly service. The room was a good size and clean. Very close to amenities and the public transport (U and S Bahn) We had a meal one evening in the hotel and the service was excellent, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was very good. A lovely place to stay.

The Hotel and it's services are fine. What disturbed us was that there was no place to put our cloth and we could not un pack our suitcases, which is not comfortable

Most of the staff were welcoming and helpful but a couple were not so when my boyfriend needed to charge up his laptop and log onto the free WiFi in the lobby area. The room was adequate, a little on the small side but clean. We were hoping for a king bed and not 2 singles pushed together and at times the bathroom did smell like a urinal! Also didn't […] have enough tea bags and I would suggest you buy a small milk if you don't like your tea black! Quiet and comfortable hotel in good location, close to Kur'dam and metro station. It has tea and coffee making facilities, which I find important.
