Cal Neva Resort - Crystal Bay

Hotel is right on the north shore of Lake Tahoe but we had a hard time finding a place to access the lake itself. We ended up driving a couple miles down the road. This hotel is not the place if you are looking for alot of gaming action. However, there are bigger casinos within walking distance.

Great place to stay if going to a concert at Crystal Bay Club. Wish we could have walked down to the beach as mentioned in the guest book in the room, but this is no longer possible. Beautiful Views!!

The outside of the building itself is in disrepair but the room was nice, clean and big with a spectacular view. Go on the tunnel tour to get the full history of the property including walking thru secret passageways used by Frank Sinatra and Marylin Monroe We stay often and always enjoy our stay.

This historic hotel is in SERIOUS need of remodeling. Unpainted plywood nailed over some windows, VERY marred walls. Overpriced wine...$16 for a short-pour. Efficient bartender/server but not friendly at all.

I love love love the Cal-Neva Hotel. Fantastic location, history that is amazing, and right on beautiful Lake Tahoe. It just doesn't get any better than this! I hope someone like Marriott comes in and revitalizes this historic Hotel - it is getting tired :(

The stay was awesome. The staff was great. The only drawback was that the hot tub was out of service. We were looking forward to that after skiing.

We had an Executive Lakeview room on the 8th floor. The hotel is quiet and some facilities could use updating - like the elevators. But where it really matters for us - the room was perfect, especially for such a great price. The customer service here is very poor, the staff are very rude and have a lot of attitude. The cleanliness of the room is very questionable, I noticed stains on the some of the bedding.

I have stayed at the CalNeva several times this year -- whenever I drive up from the Bay Area to ski Squaw or Northstar. The place is about 15 - 20 minutes' drive past those resorts on Crystal Bay. The CalNeva is showing her age but has a lot of personality; the front desk and restaurant staff are super friendly. The rooms are large and always clean. […] A very good value, especially when you consider that a night at the cheapest motels, next to the freeway in Truckee costs more than twice what the CalNeva costs. We got a great rate and a private chalet with a view of the lake and a cozy fireplace. Walking distance to Crystal Bay with a wonderful restaurant ..with happy hour meals.

This was our second stay and we will stay again. It is great for parents with young children because of the arcade being in sight of the slot machines. They have around 20 machines not a lot but if you have kids it is perfect. If you are younger you will want to go down the street to the bigger hotels but I still recommend staying at Cal Neva over other […] hotels in the area. Views out of all rooms are AMAZING and the lake is walking distance. Also, there are a lot of good restaurants around town and very friendly people. The in hotel restaurant was also good. They did have a problem with hot water this stay but without us even asking they offered us a voucher for breakfast to cover the inconvenience. Hot water was not fluctuating during a stay two weeks prior. Mentioned to the front desk on checkout. It got worse during my last stay: hot water in the room fluctuated between ice cold to cold (next to the room during the prior stay).

This was a very dissapointing stay, the reason: No hot water for 2 days! And the attitude of the night shift lady when I called to tell them there was no hot water was ridiculous. She said they were working on it and that she had no idea when it would be complete. Didn't offer to move me to another room with hot water.... Because nearly the entire tower […] was out of hot water! What a joke. I would stay away from this place. Lisateave

We stayed at this hotel during our visit to Squaw Valley and given the hotels.com reviews and customer reviews, we were pretty surprised when we arrived at our room. We got a king sized bed, with quality comforters and linens (unlike the standard cheap hotel comforters). The bed was super comfortable and we had an incredible night sleep at the hotel. […] The room was super quiet, but I think we got lucky because we passed by some rooms that had rowdy guests. The room itself was nice and big, clean, and the view of Lake Tahoe was spectacular. Granted, you can notice a little bit of wear and tear in some fo the furniture, but it's only if you look for it. This hotel was one of the cheaper options I could find in North Lake Tahoe during the later part of the 2011-2012 winter season. What surprised me is that our basic room had quite an amazing view of both the lake and the surrounding mountains, which usually comes at a premium in nature areas like Lake Tahoe. The hotel was pretty basic, furniture and […] decorations a little worn and discolored, but it was generally pretty clean. What bothered us was that we couldn't get hot water in the bathroom the second night, and the issue had not been fixed the following morning (16 hour span). The reception desk was apologetic, but seemed confused about the source of the problem and did not have an estimated time of repair. We were offered a cabin room (outside the hotel, though nearby) to use the shower facilities, but the terms of this arrangement were not very clear and the solution did not seem sufficient for the number of customers seeking working showers. The atmosphere in the lobby was a little sad, as the slot machines and other casino related games were out of order both on Friday and Sunday, only in operation for some time on Saturday. If you have no interest in the casino component of this Nevada hotel, and assuming they fixed their hot water by now, it's a great solution to stay in a room with a view in the beautiful North Lake Tahoe area. CalNeva always offers a great experience. This visit, however, the TV worked intermittenly and that ended up being ok with our schedule. The repairperson fixed it when we really wanted the TV but it went out agaiin. We will definitely stay there again!

We stay here every time we ski- family and dog friendly, 10 minutes from northstar, and great restaurants nearby. Great ghost tour too!

We stay in standard room from 3/1 to 3/4. Hotel could have been much better since location is such beautiful spot. Front desk service is average and room quality is below average. Shower need to improve drastically, water pressure of hot water and cold water were change on its own and I have to constantly adjust knob to get right temperature. Heater […] was working okay however, fan was running very loud. I was bitten on my body and not sure what it was. I think place could be improve and more lights to entrance of hotel and parking lot. I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness, spaciousness, and overall first-impression of my King-sized room. It's true that a closer look revealed deferred maintenance, but I was generally pleased. I thought I was risking bedbugs when I made my reservation, but my fears were eased when I saw the room. Beautiful views!!! Room was very nice, comfortable and very clean. Staff was very nice, but bar closed at 9 and all slot machines (very few to start with) are also turned off at that time...Within walking distance of other food place, would not recommend food, diner was closed, and had to order from bar. I've stayed in some pretty dodgy places in my lifetime, and as long as I've been able to take a sleep and shower, I've been comfortable. CalNeva failed on both fronts: 1) Rm 202 is on the ground floor right next to the lobby AND the housecleaning room, so we constantly heard door opening noises, even at 11:30pm. On Sunday, they had a concert till 3AM […] and drunk folks kept stumbling and laughing their way down the hall. Yeah. Freakin hilarious. 2) I turned on the shower and it seemed fine, stepped in and quite suddenly the water turned ice cold... like Tahoe in the winter cold. After I stopped screaming, we called the front desk and they contacted 'engineering' who turned on the 'pumps' to our room. We had to do this every day. The only fun thing about this was imagining that the engineering room was this complicated meshwork of pumps, tubes, and levers right out of Dr. Seuss that controlled hot water around the hotel. We were certain, that by giving us hot water some other room in the hotel got screwed. 3) We were supposed to sleep on Sunday and leave Monday morning, but the concert noise was so bad we left at midnight and drove 8 hours directly home. I would suggest remodle or better cleaning. My room was missing the smoke a detector. Not bad but not great.

If you want a fairly inexpensive room with a view of Lake Tahoe and don't care that the hotel is really no longer a resort or casino, this is the place. We booked here because it was close to the Crystal Bay Casino where we were attending a concert and was about half the price of other places close by. The hotel is close to Lake Tahoe ski resorts with pretty nice view of Lake Tahoe. The lobby and main building look and feel old and really need remodelling as other reviews have said. The AC in the room is controlled outside ambient temperature, and turning on the AC even on Low/Cool made the room super hot. Had to request and was given a different […] room since the first one felt like a oven. Had to turn off AC at night. The staff was very friendly and the hotel was in a great location. The hotel itself needs some upkeep. I was originally given the wrong room and they were very quick to resolve the error. Once I moved to the new room, I found that the light was burnt out but maintenance came quickly and changed the bulb.. The room itself was large, clean and had a breathtaking […] view of the lake. The rooms do not come with fridges so I had to rent one at 10.00 a night. Later in the night my roof started leaking from above the window. I just placed a garbage can under it to catch the water. The next evening i came back to room after snowboarding to find my food in the fridge had gone bad as the fridge did not work and Iost my food. Staff was very nice to refund me for the fridge. The Cal Neva casino and Resort was very calming. We stayed in an Executive Lakeview room. Our room was very clean with a beautiful view of the lake. The maid service was very friendly and so was the staff.I say our stay was very calming because not to much going on there. Many reviews of this hotel say it's dated, yes maybe but in a quaint way. The rooms were spotless, many clean towels, and the views of the lake could not be beat!!!! If you Glitz, don't stay here, but if you want clean, cheap and a great location, this is it...

Dirty room. Never clean bedding, floor. Almost no service. Don't speak to an old lady and a tall guy in front desk. They don't offer good service. Never come back again. never never

Kind of dirty inside room. Shower curtain and room wall was defiantly dirty; however, the bed and bedding was clean. Its a good location for those that just need a place to sleep.

I really enjoyed my room and stay at this location. Until, a manager came to my room, knocked and told me we had to leave and were out checkout time. I felt he was thowing us out. What was wrong with this action was I had reservations for two nights, and this was the 2nd stay. My room was already paid for and confirmed. I then went directly to the front […] desk, having informing that manager of my two night reservation, as was confirm the matter was corrected. Until that night I got another call from the front desk informing that my room had not been paid for and that I needed to pay for another night. I went down to the front desk at 11pm, and the front desk associate said she found my reservation, that that day time manager who had came to throw us out, did not update our reservation information. That same front desk assoicate was there at the desk when the manager had said he corrected their error, and that everything was ok. But, I still got another call to vacate or pay. Very frustrating. But the hotel was still a nice plae to stay. Be careful I enter the address in my GPS, and the hotel was still another 2 miles up the road, on Stateline Road. The lake views from your room are breathtaking. The rooms and hotel are a bit dated with needed maintenance but always clean. I would rather they keep it this way with the low rates. A nicer hotel with these views would be so much pricier.

The cal neva Resort Hotel casino is located is a stoning place has nice view of the lake and a friendly staff. the rooms are dated but comfortable. My experience was not the best due to a hollowing party that was programed on the second day I stayed there. there was a lot of movement in the corridors. my wife could not sleep. The hotel management should […] take into account their events, in order to locate guests accordingly, we did not come to the hotel for the party but were located in the same floor as the saloon where the party was. we noticed that too late. There's not much left to the casino here, just the center bar and a few slots. The view, however, remains spectacular. Back in the 50s this was quite the happening place, and there's plenty of memorobilia here to show that. Today, it's a lot slower. Our room seemed recently renovated. I wondered why I got a clean room for 41 bucks... No gambling and the casino is bankrupt. It made for a great private experience, could not beat the price at all for a large clean room. It was dated, but who cares. Restaurant also had good food and great service...
