Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre Boutique Hotel - San Francisco

Consistently a very friendly and lovely place to stay. It is my go to san Francisco Hotel to stay. For SF it is a great deal. The decor is tasteful and the eco friendly approach is wonderful considering there is abundant waste in the hotel industry.

Average hotel for area. Its an older hotel and has been remodeled over the years but shows its age. Carpets were highly stained, windows appeared as though they hadn't been opened or cleaned in years. Parking across the street was convenient but we had to hike baggage to hotel where cars were parked in the loading zone. No baggage assistance when we […] got to stair entrance or assitace holding the door open despite staff standing idle in the lobby. Actually, no help from hotel staff to comment on, rather non-exisitant. Shops and resturants within easy walking distance during day. At night, lots of clubs in area. After midnight on Fri and Sat we saw lots of homeless, prositutes and drunks but this is consistant with this part of SF. Overall, the hotel wasn't a hit with us. Lisateave

The mat're'd was super cool. The place was nice, a little far from most spots but the walks are okay. The only problem is all of the less fortunate people who are always around the hotel.

The staff is exceptionally nice. Lots of cultured travelers in the hotel. The building has been kept up; you can tell by the inch of paint layers on the walls and trim. Walls are thin, so don't expect complete silence. Cool place though.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking is available at extra charge. WiFi is free but in our roo it was super slow, sometimes unusable. Unfortunately the hotel is close to the Tenderloin district and so there are a lo of homeless people and drug addicts lingering in the surrounding streets. Had a very nice time at this hotel. Good location and nice staff.

It was a really nice hotel with very friendly and helpful people at the desk. The rooms were quite large and had each a special character. You can really live in it.

The hotel was really cute and comfortable and walking distance to amazing restaurants. The staff was wonderful, definitely went above and beyond!! Don't think I would stay with my kids, kind of interesting folks in the neighborhood at night.

Overall, very good. Appreciated the decor. The room was clean, service was great. Location is excellent for easy access to all spots downtown and around the city. Room could use a little paint touch up and walls were a little thin. Could hear a lot of the conversation in a room next door.

I knew I would be arriving quite late in SF and needed a central place to crash. The location of this hotel was very good and judging from pictures, the place looked nice and with a character. The room was very clean, the internet worked without many problems and the price was OK for what you got. The staff were very friendly and helpful, complimentary drinks each evening are a great way of meeting other guests. The room was comfortable and clean. Amenities were good and we would recommend this hotel as value for money.

The hotel is a very nice old hotel. The room itself was nicely furnished and roomy; however, there isn't a lot of room in the bathroom to store your toiletries. The bed was a little hard, but then as a pregnant woman, you are never comfortable. The noise level came from both other guests in the hallways and the many sirens that went by at night. Well placed for travelling around the city. Very friendly staff. However rooms are in need of an update and can be very noisey

My room was really cute and clean. But the windows, even when closed, did nothing to block out the noise of the neighborhood. Every car that drove past, every drunk that belched could be heard throughout the night. Perhaps rooms facing the back of the building may be quieter.

The room was clean and the staff was nice. The room is very old and has no control for the room temp. The TV was a small 19" tube TV. There was a Fire Station a block away and you will hear sirens all night long. It takes 45 minutes to get your car from the Valet. The neighborhood has a lot of homeless people walking around beware.

The hotel people are really nice, their response was really quick. Location was good enough for the price and we could use cable car from about 2 blocks away from hotel. The hotel people are really nice, kind, and friendly so we liked the hotel, except one thing. They had miss communication and that made our trip unhappy. In the last day, we asked them […] to call a taxi to go to airport. And they offered us hotel's transportation, and it was almost same price as taxi so we made sure we can use credit card, and we accepted the offer. Since we were leaving the U.S., it was important for us if we can use credit card or we still have to have some cash for taxi. When we arrived at airport and tried to pay the money, the driver was like no way i can accept credit card, and his face was like what a hell are you talking about, i dont accept cash. And the driver was pretty frustrated due to the traffic jam. It was really uncomfortable for us because we made sure we can use credit card at the hotel front desk and we could't feel his apology. Fortunately we had some cash, but the transportation and the driver made our memory pretty bad at the end. So if we didn't use their transportation, the hotel was really nice!! Lisateave

Very friendly staff, room was big, location good. WiFi was down the entire three days of my stay, but that's my only complaint.

I truly appreciate the staff for making our stay comfortable. We felt very welcome the moment we stepped unto the hotel. Thank you.

For the price we paid in San Francisco and the lack of research we really put into the vacation, this wasn't a bad choice. The staff was great; helpful and friendly. The hotel itself was charming and different than the typical style hotel...it was great to have different color schemes, etc. The 2 negatives we found were with Saha, the attached restaurant. […] It was overpriced, the staff wasn't amazing and the food was average. The second was the location. There weren't many choices close by to run to for quick meals (ex: breakfast). Fly, which is next door is a neat place to go for happy hour but when you're trying to grab a quick bite before a tour, there's much to be desired. All told, it wasn't bad for the price we paid. the staff couldn't be more helpful and pleasant. the only bad thing that happened during my stay was that the restaurant would only serve groups for breakfast and I was a lone traveler. not even coffee!!!

We stayed for three nights, 15-17 March 2012. I travel a fair bit and the service at this hotel was extremely courteous and more importantly, it was truly felt as being genuine. The visibly happy front desk staff was truly accomodating, in giving out directions, pointing one area to stay away from after dark, booking a city tour, providing nearby restaurant […] recommendations (Modern Thai is a must if you stay there), and even provided complementary wine after we had missed their happy hour after travelling all day from the Mid-West. They also hooked me up with a patient IT representative on the phone when my laptop had a connectivity issue (it got solved!). There is also $20/day parking (no in-out privileges) across the street, which is highly recommended in SF since street parking is rare (better park the car and travel by bus/cab for short-stay durations). All in all, this is the place to stay for 1920 hotel character with outstanding service !!! Lisateave

Very pleasant staff greeted us and offered suggestions for dinning. The bar next door made some great drinks. We had a very comfortable room and were happy with the entire experience. For the price its a great deal in the Union Square Area.

Well maintained, larger, comfortable rooms. Neighborhood isn't super swanky but it's really close to California and Van Ness which makes use of public transit easy. Bring some ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. Like most buildings in the core of San Francisco, this building is old. Sound carries through the walls and under doors. we loved the hotel, the atmosphere was charming of both the lobby and the room, the only complaint we had was that we were a little warm with no way to adjust the heat the first night but when I mentioned it the next morning they explained that it was centrally controlled but that they could turn it off and bring a portable heater that we could adjust […] and they had that taken care of within the hour, very impressed that they had a solution and handled it right away, very nice people at the desk too, great experience, my son lives in the city and I told him it would be a great place to recommend to people when they come Lisateave

Good value. I had an enjoyable stay for 5 nights at the Carlton. Very friendly desk personnel. Comfortable room. The wi-fi was abysmally slow, but it was free. Had noisy neighbors one night. I would certainly return.

I have been to San Fran several times and have always stayed in and around Union Square.After staying at the Carlton for three nights,I wonder why I didn't do it much earliler.Unlike the hotels in and around Union Squares,which are very costly and the surrounding area noisy all day and night.The Carlton Hotel was reasonably priced,in a quiet and safe […] area,only a short walk to Union Square and had good large and clean rooms.The staff were always extremely helpful and went out of there way to make you feel at home.I will stay there again on my next visit. overall, it was a great experince, we made our reservtion like 30 min before arriving on hotels.com. we got a special deal, for free parking, where they valet the car, they let us leave the car the next day even after we checked out so we can explore more of the city by foot and bus. The hotel was super cute, clean, and the staff was excellent. There was a very international feel- we witnessed our front desk employee speak 4 different languages! The surrounding neighborhood is not very nice however, I wouldn't recommend walking places.

Theo and every other member of the staff we came in contact with was extremely friendly and helpful! Loved the room and the fresh air from the fully opening windows (western exposure, 7th floor). This is not a great location if you are looking for a quiet nites sleep with street noise/music (it was a Sat night) and sirens forcing us to close up the […] windows and we still had a tough time sleeping as the party sounds from the street continued to about 4AM. Location is close to many dining and drinking places just a few blocks away on Polk. A cool hotel and great customer service, and lots of nice touches make this older building well worth a visit and a return. CHEERS!. Lisateave

Parking is $34/day plus tax and tips! However, everything else about this hotel is fantastic would stay again. Very urban though, not for everyone.

Very nice place. Very boutique type. But the location is the best. If you dont know the city, you would be hesitate to walk around at night. Beside that, its wonderful.

I only had a chance to spend one night. It was cozy, comfortable, convenient... the restaurant on the premises - Saha - is unique, elegant, delicious and diverse. All personnel were wonderful. Bed was comfy and amenities included everything I needed. It feels like you're part of the neighborhood, but pampered a bit at the same time. Very, very convenient […] for me. I'll be back... The room was clean, small, and suited our needs. Unfortunately, the neighborhood was questionable, as there appeared to be some ladies of the night on nearby corners. I'd go there again, though, even knowing that!

The hotel staff was great and the hotel is in a great location close to the cable cars and buses. If you travel to San Francisco I'd recommend skipping the rental car and just using the cable cars and buses as parking is difficult and more expensive. Shuttles to and from the airport are convenient and run at $16 per person.
