Best Western Hotel California - San Francisco

We stayed here for 2 nights on our way to Hawaii. First of all, the staff is the friendliest I've ever seen in a hotel. Very helpful when it comes to directions! Def call ahead to use their shuttle to/from airport..1/2 the price of a cab. The room was small but very nice and updated. Bathroom was great too...Plenty of hot water!! Room was nice, but the bar below was way to loud!!! They need to upgrade the hotel windows to block out the noise. Great location, but don't return to the room before 2 AM if you want a quite nights sleep.

they messed up the reservation and did not have a suite available for us.the breakfast buffet closed an hour early without warning when my son was not even awake yet. older building so the windows did not block out the loud street at all

Tim at front desk was wonderful. Lacks major ammenities like gym and business center, but very accomodating front-desk and hotel services. Very ecclectic place. I would stay again.

Enjoyed wine and cheese everyday between 5 and 6:30, relative proximity to Union Square at a competitive price , and complimentary continental breakfast. Missed having a mini refrigerator.

The hotel is ok, but for the price, the rooms are extremely small. Also the walls are paper thin. There was a restaurant outside my room and even though I was on the 3rd floor, I could here conversations word for word. I was kept awake unitl 1-2am by how loud it was outside. The staff was friendly and helpful and the room was clean.

SMALL and OLD are the 2 words to describe this place. I stayed here for a week with my boyfriend not knowing what we were getting ourselves into. This is not the type of hotel you would want to go to for a vacation. If you had to stay here and you didnt care that the room is the size of a closet and the bathroom is the size of half a closet then you […] should stay here. The rooms were literally a room with a bed and maybe 4 ft of space to walk and a tiny bathroom. Everything in the hotel is old. Rooms look like hostel private rooms. There were lamps in the room without any where to plug in so I dont even know why they were there. Only 1 plug in the room to charge your items and the other one was in the bathroom. Also 1 night the fire alarm went off at 3am and the whole building had to evacuate, fire trucks came and after 20 minutes everyone went back in without an announcement or anything, til this day I still dont know what happened, the next morning I asked the front desk about it and they replied "I dont know I wasnt here last night" talk about horrible service! Never again! And besides the hotel itself, the area is shady, you cannot walk without 5 homeless people trying to ask you for money. Not my idea of vacation. I gave 2 stars because it was 3 blocks from union square and they had continental breakfast, and dont expect any protein, its from a vegetarian restaurant so basically carbs and fruit. Lisateave

We loved the fact that this is an old hotel. That is to say, it was charming and cozy. The staff were fantastic...always ready to help, offer a tip, store our bags after we checked out (we had a red-eye flight out), We also loved the central location. We walked everywhere!! The included breakfast was extraordinary. It had fresh-made waffles, eggs, ham, […] all kinds of cereal and breads, yogurt, just to name some of the items! The room was very bright and the bed was very comfortable. The only down side was that the room was a little on the cool side. We were there in early January and the in-room heater worked, but just didn't seem able to put out quite enough heat. Then again, San Francisco was under an unusual cold spell while we were there. Everything was pretty nice about this hotel except the room and the neighborhood. We paid a lot for a Suite that turned out to be two small rooms connected by a small hallway and a bathroom. The Hotel has its charme for sure. Very antique and oldfashioned. Room was very small and smelled like used socks when you enter it. Bed was not so comfortable because of soft matress. Some stuff members were very helpful and some not so. Everyday different one. Breakfast is continental. I did not like the coffee at all. Aweful taste. I guess it was starbucks. We liked our room, it was cute, clean and had a lot of character. The wooden floors were quite special, along with the huge windows. The staff were very helpful and nice. The only downside was that the king bed had a pretty big dip in the middle. Otherwise I would rate this 5.

I visited the Best Western Hotel California for 6 days to attend a conference at the nearby Moscone Conference Center. I wanted to stay closer to the Center, but the hotels were booked up. The walk was not bad though, about 20 minutes, and you get to pass by Union Square and see some of SF's famous trolleys go by. The only negative thing I have to say about my experience was that the surrounding area is a bit sketchy at night. Many drifters and street noise, so I might not recommend this if you are traveling with a family. But I travelled by myself and never felt unsafe, just a bit more cautious than normal. Our family of 5 stayed here in August and we had a wonderful experience. Had the 2 bedroom suite and it was perfect. The central location was great, the breakfast every morning was delicious. The only minor flaw was the very slow elevator but that was no big deal.

Overall good. Matteresses need to be changed out for new. Bath towels too small. Staff helpful. Dont go for the next door cheaper parking; they are a bunch of money grabbing thugs.

This hotel is located in a very old building, and it shows. The room we stayed in was closet-sized with only one electrical outlet and no air conditioning, but I'm sure that is standard for many establishments in San Francisco. It did have an old overhead fan, but it listed from side to side and seemed very close to falling down. The bathroom was basically […] dismal, with old pink shower tiles, cracked floor tiles, a patched tub, and a sloppy grout job applied over the fixtures. Cosmetic issues aside, the water temperature oscillated between burning hot and freezing cold, so I opted to go without a shower. Only go here if you want to party all night. The bar down stairs is extremely loud and you need ear plugs to sleep. The rooms are small. The TV did not work in one room. All of the people that work there were nice except for the chef that verbally attacked my wife in front of my 6 year old son over him trying to help pour milk on his cereal. This went on for ten minutes with him continuing to give every one in the family dirty looks the entire time we had breakfast.
