A classic in downtown Portland, but with all the up to date amenities. The room was very nicely laid out and appointed, even though it was of modest size. We listened to jazz in the lounge, and enjoyed free wine tasting in the hotel's library of nearly 3000 books, each of which was written by a former guest and most of which were signed. There is a […] fully certified librarian who can tell you all the stories of the authors' stays at the hotel. Truly a delight. The only negatives had to do with how long it took to get served in the lounge and the restaurant, but I believe these were just momentary glitches. We will definitely return to the Heathman on our next trip to Portland. Lisateave

Everything was great about our stay except in the morning. While we were sleeping housekeeping kept trying to come in (probably tried 3 times between 8am and 10am). I highly recommend the Heathman. Great staff, luxurious rooms with super comfortable beds. Don't miss the chocolatier/ espresso bar in the corner of the lobby! The sipping chocolate is out of this world and the coffee is top notch. I hear the restaurant in the hotel is really good, but we walked to Higgins up the street and were absolutely blown away […] there! The location of the Heathman is perfect. Our room was not spacious, but that is the only negative thing we could say about our stay at The Heathman. Every detail in the room, from the quality of the tea to the nightlight under the bathroom mirror was wonderful. It is located just 3 blocks from Nordstroms and 1/2 mile from the Pearl District. The Heathman was a great pick for me as I attended an event at the Snitzer...right next door. All the staff was great, going the extra mile to answer all my questions. The bed was great...hard, but not too hard...cozy. Everything was clean and neat.

I've stayed at the Heathman multiple times, and find it to be an exceptional boutique hotel. The rooms, though smaller in size, have wonderful details such as comfortable chairs, excellent coffee you can prepare in a French press, and extremely good beds you can select from a menu. I love going into their bar/lounge in the evening; it's very comfortable […] whether I'm alone or with a companion. My only caution would be to allow extra time for valet car retrieval at times that are likely to be busy for their guests. They were unable to keep their 5-10 minute commitment one Saturday morning when several guests all needed to be across town for the same meeting. Tried this hotel for something new. As a frequent hotel guest (50-75 nights/year at hotels, mostly 4+ stars), I offer the following feedback: great beds, good downtown location and nice evening ambience in the lounge. Nicely renovated historic hotel. Drawbacks: no view (just buildings), no parking (expensive valet), no pool, and smallish rooms. We booked […] 2 nights at this hotel after reviewing its ratings. Apparently, this hotel had some mention in a popular novel, never a great way to pick a hotel.) Online booking stated it included parking but we were charged for 2 nights parking (plus a room upgrade). Took me an hour or more to access my email to prove to the disbelieving manager that the parking was included to get a credit on my bill. Would have expected to be believed (or that hotel would know their own offers), or that I would have received a credit for a room upgrade due to the hassle and time it took me to prove that our rate included parking. Got the credit for the parking, but unfortunately this soured the experience so service gets a lower rating. . Overall, a good hotel, probably best for couples, but traveling with kids, we will stay at the nearby Westin next time where we are Starwood members. Lisateave

We met our friends who flew in from Las Vegas for a quick visit. The hotel is in great physical shape, and all staff people had such pride in their hotel. We booked Renaissance Suite rooms, which have two baths. The rooms were very comfy and well-appointed. We got such a great deal through Expedia that we were a bit concern that the quality of our stay would not be up to high standard but we were so wrong. We had stayed at the Heathman a few years ago and so we know what they were capable of. They did not disappoint. The hotel staff was exceptional. We would definitely stay there again.

Good thing about this hotel is the location and it has a semi-important landmark situation (I don't understand why). Bad things are: rooms are not clean, some of them smell really bad, rooms are very small, everything looks old (maybe that's the charm) and the bed was super uncomfortable (others might like it but I couldn't sleep most of the night). […] I stayed in another hotel last year in the same neighborhood that is 30-40% cheaper with overall better quality and more comfortable rooms. Have staying before, but in what seemed like a much larger room. Sink in bathroom was almost too small to wash hands!!! BUT overall we were very pleased to stay in Heathman again. Restaurant and hotel might communicate better. We foolishly assumed that guests of hotel could be assured a spot for breakfast - no.

The best part of the stay was meeting the hotel librarian. She hosts a wine tasting for hotel guests. The library showcases books written only by authors who have stayed at the hotel. It was truly the highlight of the trip to meet her and learn more about this unusual feature of the hotel. Plus the books are available for loan to hotel guests.

I visited Portland with my daughter for a few days of R&R from Alaska. I had wanted to stay at the Heathman in city center since it is so easy to access from the airport using the MAX system. Most all you could want is within walking distance or using the MAX. The staff at the Heathman were super friendly and seemed to go out of their way to make sure […] we had everything we needed. The restaurant was wonderful with first class service and out of sight food. I have stayed at 4 and 5 star hotels before but I have to say that this is the best experience I have had to date. The hotel is very nice, however our room, #903, a queen room was very small, with a view of other buildings roofs. The only issue we had was in their restaurant the morning we left. I bought a bloody mary and the bloody mary mix was so harsh tasting that I couldn't even take a sip. It was a cross between Willamette River water and clam juice, it was […] terrible. I also had an omelette that was cold and wet in the middle. How do you mess up an omelette? Other than that it is still a very nice hotel. Next time I may stay across the street at the Hilton. The service was superior to many other 4 and 5 star hotels I've stayed in. Happy hour in the lounge was very nice with an interesting menu. There were three issues with the hotel room which were problematic and, in my opinion, are basic and should have been addressed before allowing guests to use the room. 1) The vent in the bathroom is inoperable. The room is tiny. The bathroom is tiny too and has no windows. Therefore, ventilation is vital. 2) The lack of ventilation in the bathroom leads […] to the next issue--dank, musty, bad smell in the bathroom. I asked for the shower curtain to be changed before I left for the morning. When I returned in the evening the shower curtain had been changed, but the new one was still wet and still smelled. I asked for a dry shower curtain, but the new one also smelled musty/mildewy. 3) The curtain rod for one of the windows in the room was broken. The staff person tried to fix it (all the while in our room--awkward), but couldn't fix it. He finally said he had to return the next day to change the curtain rod. All of these issues should have been addressed before anyone was rented the room. Lisateave
