We stay in San Francisco twice a year for work & pleasure. But this was one of the worst stays. The walls were so thin you could hear people walking, talking, and closing their doors. It was a bit noisy, especially with the person walking in the room above mine. My main complaint was the single, very slow elevator. Windows in my room didn't open and no a/c so I would worry about this room in the summer (401). Easy walk to Union Square and local places to eat. Not the nicest neighborhood area but better than other options.

The hotel sure has style and is about 5 -10 minute walk from the cool tourist area. It had a fridge in the room that was ready to use as there is no kitchen in the hotel, nice gym with latest equipment, big TV, and good internet signal. room was fine but kinda small. it was nicely decorated but did not seem like it was worth what i paid for one night. i had rented a room at a motel nearby for half the price and got the same quality room with free parking. there is almost no parking in this area unless you want to pay $3.50 an hr at the meters or $35 for valet at the hotel. front desk […] was not very knowledgeable about surrounding area. Had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Vertigo. The decor was modern and funky, the rooms were well laid out and the staff was extremely friendly. They have about 4 or 5 people working there so you get to know them on a first name basis which is great. The only real negative I have is location. It is a brisk 15-20 minute walk from Union Square. The walk […] to Union Square/Market St is fine because it is downhill but the walk to the Hotel is all uphill and can be tiresome, especially after a beg meal haha. Having said that, there is a solution! You can take the cable car from Market St. right up to Sutter St. (about 5-6 blocks) then simply walk the other 5 blocks down Sutter. Cell Phone coverage in rear of hotel is abysmal, I could not get a signal any where in my room. Worked fine in lobby. WiFi signal was strong but the internet access was spotty, some times it was super fast and stable, other times it dropped every few minutes. Room was nice, television awesome. Night staff was great, morning teams a little surly. Window […] was not sealed well, so outside noise was like I was outside. My husband and I stayed at Hotel Vertigo for 4 nights while we were in San Francisco for vacation. The hotel is located approximately a 20 minute walk from Union Square (so not really that close if you're looking to be super close to all the action). The hotel itself looks like an old apartment that has been converted into a hotel. The decor of the […] hotel is quite modern, but if you look closely, there is a bit of run-down feel to it (i.e. a bit of peeling in the bath tub, the sinks don't drain that quickly, walls have a bit of peeling), but overall, for the price you pay, it is not bad. The beds are decent and comfortable, so i cant complain. The staff at the front desk are very friendly and helpful with tips of what to do in the city and how to get around with local buses and subway since we wanted to avoid the hefty cab bills that could add up quickly. There is no breakfast at the hotel, but they do put out some coffee and teas in the morning which is nice. There are some cafes where you could have breakfast nearby so its not a big deal. Lisateave

Great experience. The area starts to trail off a bit as you go away from Union Square into the Tenderloin but it's OK. The bed wasn't huge but linens and desk were nice.

There's nothing flash about the Hotel Vertigo (apart from the gorgeous lobby furniture), but it's in a good location, not too far from downtown and on several bus routes, the bed's very comfortable, as is the towelling robe, and it has everything you need for a stay. No room service but there's several shops and cafes nearby.

great! gregory and sean at the desk are very helpful. an added attraction is that Gregory sings along with the cd tapes and fills the lobby with cheer! The Christmas decorations in the hotel were beautiful!

Here on business for 4 nights. An older hotel but you wouldn't really know from the rooms, clean, good furniture, free WiFi. I enjoyed it. The location was convenient. The neighborhood was safe, but not as nice as Union Square since this is close to the Tenderloin district.

The room was comfortable, and nice to return to after a full day. The staff was helpful in dining option recommendations in the area, and in making connections with airport shuttles. The music in the lobby was fun! The only concerns were that the coffee maker had to be moved to plug in, and that there really wasn't a table at which to eat "take out." […] A little creativity took care of both matters. I recently stayed for four nights at Hotel Vertigo in San Francisco. I would recommend it highly. This, the hotel in Hitchcock's Vertigo, is well located in Sutter St an easy walk downhill from the frenzy of Union Sq in a great location filled with students from the SFArt Institute and cafes. There is also a bus to take you back up the hill in case […] of tiredness! The hotel decoration in orange and white was done a few years ago and could do with some touching up in parts but this is minor. All my experiences with staff both at front desk and cleaning staff were helpful and friendly. The hotel does not have its own airport shuttle though will organize one. I used BART at Powell to get to and from SFO. It was a bit of an effort on arrival uphill with luggage from Powell but doable and not a unique experience in SF. I would definitely stay there again. Great service, they were happy to accommodate a late booking amendment and the reception staff were very helpful when asked about local information and arranging transport. This boutique hotel is quite nice, and well situated near union square (3 min walk), fisherman's warf (20 min walk), and financial district/north beach. From what I read, hotels right in Union Square are riddled with homeless people. Hotel Vertigo definitely has less homeless around it, but I think it borders with Tenderloin, so it can get a tad shady […] at night. During the day though it's great! We walked up Polk (nice shops along the way) to the exploratorium and Greens Restaurant, which was very walkable and beautiful. North Beach is probably the least "sketchy" neighbourhood though, so I would recommend there if you're looking for a "cleaner" environment. That said, Hotel Vertigo's rooms are very nicely decorated, and the showers are modern and huge! The reception area smelled of smoke though; they seem to not mind people smoking right outside the sliding doors, which is an enclosed area so it wafts in. One other thing about the rooms; we had a room that was adjoined to another, and we could hear our neighbours *really* easily. Luckily, they were pretty quiet, but I can see this being a problem with some individuals. Request a non-adjoining room is my recommendation. Lisateave

I initially booked the room because, even though it was a higher price than I wanted to pay, it was close to my evening destination and I thought I would save money by not having to take cabs to and from. The room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. For the price, I would expect some better quality channels on the tv...mostly shopping type […] channels. The staff was very polite and professional, no problems there. I have to say the price of parking would be the biggest deterrent to my returning. I went out to a local venue (which was conveniently close) and was out fairly late with my car, and ended up having to do the valet parking for over $40 after tax. Had I known that in advance, I would have found another hotel further out from where I was going. So, when I rated the quality of the hotel service as a 3, that was because of the expensive parking. If you are looking for a modern highrise hotel with all of the amenities that "hip" travelers demand these days, this may not be for you. My wife and I travel to San Francisco a few times a year and have stayed in many downton hotels. A perfect one-word description for this hotel is "quaint". From the moment you walk through the doors off the street, […] that word should jump to the front of your mind. They have the movie "Vertigo" playing on a flat screen continually behind the reception desk. The checkerboard marble floor looks very vintage. The coping and crown molding looks old, but cared for. The room was small but very comfortable. I read a few comments about slow to no hot water. We were on the sixth floor and experienced none of that. The bed was comfortable, we had a nice TV and the internet worked as promised. The front counter staff (Sam and Robert) were both very personable and helpful upon each visit. The location was very convenient for us. It is right downtown and near enough transportation where we could get anywhere we needed to. Lisateave
